Horror Stories

00:05 Hello everyone and welcome back to Horror Stories. I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep so before you drift off, I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world. 00:17 Also don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. 00:26 Story 1 The stench struck me the moment I climbed out of my unmarked Crown Victoria at the storage complex on Milwaukee's industrial side. 00:36 The August heat intensified it, making the air feel dense and suffocating, as though I were drawing each breath through a piece of soaked fabric. 00:45 After 15 years as a detective, I had handled more than my share of cases involving decomposing remains. Even so, something about this one felt different. 00:55 The manager who had contacted us was already standing near the office entrance. His first name was Frank, though I couldn't remember his last name. 01:04 He had tobacco-yellowed teeth and the kind of narrowed eyes that looked permanently fixed in a squint. 01:09 Despite the breeze passing through that early afternoon, sweat had soaked through his shirt. He repeatedly rubbed his hands against his jeans, and whenever our eyes met, he glanced away almost immediately. 01:22 My partner had called out that morning after getting food poisoning from some bad sushi. 01:27 That left me on my own for what dispatch had described as odor complaints, at a storage facility squeezed between a deserted textile plant and a scrapyard, where people tended to mind their own business. 01:40 Frank took me past row after row of orange steel doors. They all looked alike, distinguished only by the worn white numbers painted on their surfaces. 01:49 Unit 47B stood at the far end of a passage, well away from the main entrance and the area where most customers stored their belongings. 01:57 As we walked, he explained that the unit belonged to a man named Christopher Vaughn. For the previous eight months, Vaughn had paid in cash, covering three months at a time. He had never been late with the money and had never given the facility any problems. 02:12 That changed roughly three weeks earlier, when the other tenants began reporting the smell. 02:17 With every step toward 47B, the odor became more concentrated. Then I realized Frank had stopped about 30 feet short of the door. He was struggling to sort through his master keys while doing his best to avoid inhaling through his nose. 02:31 Dead pigeons were scattered along the concrete outside the unit. Flies swarmed in dense shifting masses, even though the facility supposedly received commercial-grade pest treatments every month. 02:43 Frank eventually removed the padlock, but his hands were shaking so badly that he dropped his keys twice in the process. 02:51 I instructed him to move away from the unit and call for backup. 02:55 The metal door rose with a harsh grinding shriek that carried down the passage. The sight behind it made the dead pigeons outside seem suddenly understandable. The space was larger than I had anticipated, probably ten feet wide and twenty feet deep. 03:11 Chest freezers crowded it from one wall to the other. There were seven altogether, each running with a steady electrical hum. 03:19 Strips of duct tape sealed the edges of every lid, as though whoever had put them there was determined that none would be opened by mistake. 03:26 Now the smell was almost unbearable. There was something sweet beneath the decay, mixed with a sharp chemical odor. 03:33 It reminded me of meat soaking in formaldehyde and then left out in the sun. 03:38 A strip from a label maker had been attached to the front of each freezer. 03:42 The dates on them stretched back several months, accompanied by what appeared to be some sort of reference system I couldn't decipher at a glance. Boxes of medical equipment occupied the gaps between the freezers. 03:54 They contained supplies you would normally expect to find in a hospital storeroom. Surgical gloves, scalpels still sealed in sterile wrappers, bone saws, and chemical bottles bearing names I would have needed medical training to pronounce. 04:08 I took out my phone to report what I had found, but reception inside the metal structure was too poor to make the call. 04:15 I had to walk back outside. 04:17 While we waited for the crime scene team and more officers, I questioned Frank about Christopher Vaughn. 04:23 He opened the manila folder he had been gripping and handed me the rental paperwork. 04:28 Attached to it was a photocopy of a driver's license. 04:31 The photograph showed a slender man who looked about 35. His cheeks were sunken, and his eyes seemed directed through the camera rather than toward it. 04:41 According to Frank, Vaughn visited at unusual times, most often after midnight or just before sunrise. 04:47 He always came alone. He also routinely brought black trash bags that appeared to contain something heavy. 04:54 The complaints from other renters had begun three weeks before, but Frank admitted he had noticed something peculiar months earlier. 05:01 Around 3 in the morning, he had seen Vaughn using a dolly to wheel in what looked like equipment from a restaurant. 05:08 The first patrol car reached us within 15 minutes. Both officers requested a hazardous materials response almost as soon as they smelled the air. 05:17 We secured a perimeter while waiting for the crime scene technicians. Meanwhile, I returned to my car and began checking Vaughn's name through the system on my laptop. 05:26 The information that appeared on the screen made my chest constrict. 05:30 Christopher Eugene Vaughn had been thrown out of Northwestern's medical school six years earlier after stealing cadavers from the anatomy laboratory. 05:39 He had been discovered carrying out procedures he had no authorization to perform on bodies intended for students to study. 05:46 Alongside those procedures, he had maintained extensive records on how quickly the bodies decomposed and the methods he used to preserve them. 05:54 The university had filed charges. Those charges were later dismissed after Vaughn agreed to undergo psychiatric care. 06:02 His most recent address on record was his mother's home in Kenosha. 06:06 Two years earlier, however, she had reported him missing. 06:09 She told authorities that he had stopped taking his prescribed medication and had become consumed by something he referred to as understanding the transition. 06:19 By the time the crime scene team arrived wearing full protective hazmat suits, we had cleared everyone out of the storage complex. A command station had been established in the parking lot. 06:30 The technician in charge was Diane, a woman I had worked with at other scenes. 06:35 She entered the unit first, carrying a camera. 06:38 I stayed outside and followed the live image on a monitor the team had brought. She sliced through the tape, sealing the first freezer and raised its lid. 06:47 Even with the poor quality of the video, I saw her entire body jerk backward. 06:52 Inside were human remains bundled in transparent plastic the way a butcher might wrap portions of meat. 06:58 The remains had been dismembered to varying degrees. 07:01 Arms had been detached at the joints. 07:04 Organs sat in sealed bags marked with the dates and weights. 07:08 Everything had been placed with such exactness that there was no mistaking this for an act of uncontrolled violence. 07:14 Diane's voice came over the radio. She kept it professional, but the strain underneath was unmistakable. 07:21 She confirmed what everyone watching the monitor had already understood. There were multiple victims. 07:27 For the next four hours, the technicians recorded and cataloged the contents of the unit while I stayed in contact with the headquarters and coordinated the response. 07:36 Every freezer contained a different version of the same nightmare. 07:40 In the second, the team discovered what looked like entire skeletons. The bones had been cleaned and numbered with small metal identification tags attached as though they belonged in a museum collection. 07:51 The third held jars containing organs suspended in preservative solution. 07:56 Every container carried a carefully prepared label. They listed the date of removal, the body's weight, and what appeared to be medical observations, all written in tight, cramped handwriting. 08:08 Diane also located notebooks piled in the spaces between the freezers. Together, they contained hundreds of pages describing decomposition timelines, methods of preserving tissue, and roughly executed autopsy procedures. 08:23 Vaughn had been educating himself, using bodies he had stolen as material to practice on. 08:28 The medical examiner arrived later. 08:31 Based on her initial inspection, she could distinguish at least 12 separate individuals. She cautioned us that the final count might be greater. 08:39 Most of the remains appeared to have come from morgues and funeral homes in three different states. They corresponded with reports of bodies that had disappeared during the preceding eight months. 08:50 The discovery that moved the investigation forward came when a technician found a laptop concealed behind the seventh freezer. Vaughn's email account was still open on it. 09:00 He had been communicating with dealers operating on the black market, people who supplied medical specimens to private underground collectors and research establishments working without licenses. 09:11 Yet the messages revealed that he had never completed a sale. 09:15 Instead, he repeatedly wrote about refining his methods and gaining an understanding of death that his medical education had failed to provide. 09:23 In a message sent to a prospective buyer only five days earlier, he claimed he was approaching an important discovery. 09:30 He said he had recognized patterns in the decomposition process that no one else had ever recorded. 09:36 The computer also held hundreds of photographs. Each image captured a different phase of what he had been doing. 09:42 The faces had been obscured, but the rest remained visible in crisp clinical detail. There were spreadsheets as well, recording variables that ranged from the temperature inside the storage unit to the humidity in the air. 09:55 He had organized the entire operation as though it were a grotesque scientific study. 10:01 A credit card transaction led us to Vaughn. 10:04 Although he had taken care to pay cash for the storage unit, he had been foolish enough to charge a room to his visa at a motel roughly 40 miles north near the state border. 10:14 It was the sort of rundown establishment that rented by the week, where nobody was interested in asking questions, and the carpeting looked as though it hadn't been washed since the 90s. 10:24 Shortly after sundown, local officers took positions around room 23. 10:29 I was there when they forced the door open. Vaughn offered no resistance. He sat at a particle board desk, making entries in yet another notebook. 10:39 Medical textbooks and printed papers on decomposition surrounded him. 10:43 The man in front of us barely resembled the photograph on his license. His hair reached below his shoulders, hanging in oily knotted strands. He had become so thin that his clothing draped loosely from his body, giving the impression that he had borrowed it from someone much larger. His nails were overgrown and filthy. Beneath them was something that looked like dried blood. 11:06 When I advised him of his rights, he nodded without argument. Then he asked whether we had located his work. He told me someone needed to make sure his research was preserved. 11:16 Throughout the interview, Vaughn displayed a calmness that I found deeply unsettling. He described the bodies in the same measured manner a lecturer might use when discussing specimens in a laboratory. 11:28 He acknowledged everything he had done. 11:30 What seemed to trouble him was his inability to understand why we considered it criminal. He told us exactly how he had acquired the bodies. Some came from funeral homes where he paid employees working overnight to help him. Others came from morgues he entered with stolen access cards. 11:47 At times he deliberately chose bodies awaiting cremation, believing their absence would take longer to be discovered. 11:54 He explained that he had been performing autopsies to teach himself the skills medical school had refused to let him develop. 12:01 He had written down every step because he believed his efforts amounted to a contribution to scientific knowledge. 12:08 I asked him about the relatives of the people he had taken. I asked whether he understood the violation of their dignity. 12:15 He tipped his head to one side and regarded me as though I had switched to a language he didn't recognize. 12:21 The dead, he said, had no concern about any of it. 12:24 To him, they were simply organic material undergoing a process of rearrangement. 12:29 He insisted that what he was doing would give future medical students a clearer understanding of decomposition than they could get from any textbook. 12:38 The trial ran for three weeks. I took the stand on its second day. 12:42 Vaughn's defense attorney pursued an insanity plea. Psychiatrists testified that he suffered from a severe delusional disorder as well as obsessive compulsive personality disorder. The jury however was not persuaded. There was too much evidence of deliberate preparation. He had selected bodies whose disappearance was unlikely to be noticed right away. 13:04 He had taken elaborate steps to conceal what he was doing. 13:08 Taken together, those choices indicated that he understood perfectly well that his actions were wrong. 13:14 He received a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. 13:19 Even then, he continued to maintain that he was a researcher rather than a criminal. 13:24 Six months after we opened Unit 47B, the storage complex was torn down. 13:30 The owner had been unable to find anyone willing to rent even one of its units. 13:34 Frank resigned the same day we uncovered what was inside and eventually relocated to Florida. 13:40 He said that even after the building had been cleaned, he could still smell that terrible odor. The families whose relatives had been identified finally received some closure. They were at last able to arrange proper burials. Some of the remains, however, had been damaged so extensively that returning them was no longer possible. 13:59 Two years after the Vaughn investigation, I left the department. My retirement came sooner than I had originally intended. 14:06 It wasn't fear that drove me out, and it wasn't trauma. 14:10 Something more basic had changed in the way I understood the work. 14:14 During those 15 years as a detective, I had investigated killings rooted in anger, financial greed, and jealousy. 14:21 Those emotions were recognizable to me. I could understand where they came from, even while condemning what people did because of them. 14:30 Vaughn was different. His total emotional distance, and the ease with which he reduced human bodies to objects for study, left me confronting questions I had no way to resolve. 14:41 Journalists still contact me occasionally, hoping to write about the investigation. The calls become more frequent around the anniversary. 14:49 I turn them down every time. What stays with me is not the gruesomeness of the contents of that storage unit. It is Vaughn's sincere conviction that he had accomplished something worthwhile. 15:00 As officers took him away in shackles, the final thing he told me was that another person would eventually pick up where he had stopped. 15:07 Knowledge, he said, could not be kept hidden indefinitely. 15:11 I want to believe he was mistaken, but on certain nights, long after everything around me has gone quiet, I find myself wondering whether someone is already working in a different storage unit, or perhaps a basement somewhere, continuing what he began. 15:31 Story 2 My name is Detective Ellen Carter, and I've spent approximately 12 years serving on the police force in a small town in Colorado. 15:42 The morning that changed everything was a Monday in early September 2022. 15:47 I had just returned from a week away with my husband and our two children. 15:51 The vacation had left me rested and eager to get back to work, expecting another ordinary stretch of minor theft investigations and complaints about noisy neighbors. 16:01 Our town had always been the sort of place where residents didn't bother locking their doors, and children stayed outside playing in the streets until nightfall. 16:10 I was at my desk, working through the paperwork that had accumulated while I was gone and drinking the awful coffee from the machine in the break room, when dispatch contacted me about a welfare check on Cedar Lane. 16:22 Mrs. Thompson had failed to attend her weekly book club. Her friends were concerned because she simply didn't skip those meetings. Two winters earlier, she had even turned up while suffering from pneumonia. 16:33 Cedar Lane looked like the kind of suburban street you would see photographed for a property brochure. The mailboxes matched and the neatly cared for lawns seemed almost too perfect. 16:44 Since my partner was giving testimony in court that day, I went by myself. 16:49 I assumed I would be finished quickly. 16:51 Most likely Mrs. Thompson had nodded off in front of the television or decided at the last minute to visit her daughter in Denver. 16:58 The Thompson home was a fairly modest two-story house covered in pale yellow siding. A porch wrapped around it, with hanging baskets of petunias beginning to droop in the lingering summer heat. 17:10 I knocked, but nobody responded. That was when I realized the front door wasn't completely shut. It stood open just a fraction, as though someone had pushed it closed without making sure the latch caught. 17:22 Saturday's mail still protruded from the mailbox. 17:26 An Amazon delivery sat on the porch, its packaging marked by water from the sprinklers. 17:31 Judging by those stains, it had probably been sitting there for at least a couple of days. 17:36 I pressed the door inward with my shoulder and stepped into the house, calling out loudly to identify myself. There was an unusual smell inside. It wasn't the odor of death. 17:48 After so many years in law enforcement, I was familiar with that. This was something chemical, mingled with the lingering scent of a meal that had been cooked. 17:57 Nothing in the living room appeared out of place. A television remote rested on the coffee table beside reading glasses and a crossword puzzle that was only partly completed. 18:07 Then I continued into the dining room and found her. Mrs. Thompson sat at the head of the table, her back perfectly straight. A full dinner plate was positioned in front of her. 18:17 It appeared to hold roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. 18:21 Her hands had been placed together neatly in her lap. 18:24 With her eyes shut, she almost looked as though she had drifted to sleep in the middle of dinner. 18:29 None of the food had been eaten. Even the pat of butter on the mashed potatoes remained unmelted. 18:35 There was still condensation from steam on the inside of the water glass, suggesting the meal had been put out fairly recently, perhaps during the previous day or two. 18:45 I felt for a pulse, although the waxy grayish appearance of her skin already suggested she had been dead for at least 24 hours. 18:53 More than anything else, it was the way she was sitting that disturbed me. 18:57 People don't die of natural causes and remain that precisely upright, with their hands arranged as though they are waiting to have a family photograph taken. 19:06 I immediately reported the discovery and requested additional officers and the coroner. Then I took a closer look around, being careful not to disturb anything. 19:16 The kitchen contained the ordinary remnants of someone preparing dinner. 19:20 Used pots had been left in the sink. Vegetable scraps were in the garbage. 19:25 A cookbook lay open to instructions for herb-roasted chicken, but a clipboard was also sitting on the counter. 19:32 Attached to it was what appeared to be a work order from Riverside Utilities dated three days earlier. 19:39 Someone named Jason had signed it. 19:41 A written note referred to inspecting the gas lines as part of a neighborhood modernization project. 19:47 While waiting for the crime scene unit, I used my phone to photograph everything. 19:52 As I did, another detail caught my attention. There was a second place setting directly opposite Mrs. Thompson. 19:59 Unlike hers, that plate held no food at all. It was so clean that whoever had used it appeared to have finished every bite and then wiped the surface with a piece of bread. 20:09 While the forensic team worked inside the Thompson house, I began speaking with people along the street. 20:15 I wanted to know whether anyone remembered the utility employee or had observed anything unusual during the past several days. 20:23 The first person I approached was Mr. Gallagher. 20:26 He was a retired postal worker who lived directly across from Mrs. Thompson. 20:31 Most afternoons he could be found sitting on his front porch. He remembered a white van with Riverside Utilities lettering along its side. Earlier that week, it had been parked outside several houses on Cedar Lane. 20:44 At the time, he hadn't considered it suspicious. Notices announcing infrastructure improvements had been left on everyone's doors the previous month. 20:52 He described the man driving the van as clean cut and probably in his mid-thirties. The worker had worn a blue uniform and carried both a toolbox and a clipboard. 21:02 What Mr. Gallagher remembered most clearly was how sociable he had been. 21:07 The man stopped to talk to everyone. He asked questions about their families. When he noticed Mrs. Ningian having difficulty with her grocery bags, he even helped carry them into her house. 21:18 Then Mrs. Gallagher added something that sent a tight wave of dread through my chest. 21:23 Their neighbors, the Andersons, hadn't been seen since Saturday. Newspapers were beginning to collect in the driveway. The Andersons were in their 60s. They generally kept to themselves, but they were consistent about looking after their home and yard. 21:38 Their garage stood open with both vehicles still parked inside. Leaving it that way was completely unlike them. 21:45 I called over the radio for more units without wasting another moment. 21:49 Two officers who had just arrived to assist accompanied me to the Anderson house. 21:54 The front entrance was locked. 21:56 We walked around the property and discovered that the sliding glass door leading into the kitchen had been left unlocked. 22:02 As soon as we entered, the odor reached us. 22:05 It was the same mixture of chemicals and food I had noticed at Mrs. Thompson's home, only more powerful. 22:12 We found Mr. and Mrs. Anderson in the dining room. They were sitting at opposite ends of the table, both held in that same impossibly straight posture. 22:21 Untouched dinners waited in front of them. The plates appeared to contain spaghetti covered in meat sauce with salad on the side. 22:28 Glasses of red wine had been poured, but neither showed any indication that someone had taken a sip. 22:34 A clipboard lay on the kitchen counter. It bore the identical Riverside Utilities heading in the same Jason signature. 22:41 The date was one day earlier than his visit to Mrs. Thompson's house. 22:45 This time, however, there was another item. A magnet on the refrigerator held a business card displaying the Riverside Utilities logo and a telephone number. 22:55 I dialed the number from my cell phone. A recorded message informed me it had been disconnected. 23:01 When we reached the actual Riverside Utilities Company, its representatives told us they had no employee named Jason. 23:08 There was no maintenance scheduled for Cedar Lane. 23:11 All of the company's legitimate vans were accounted for. 23:15 They also explained that their employees wore orange uniforms, not blue, and they did not simply show up at people's homes without mailing official notification at least two weeks beforehand. 23:27 As the forensic photographer continued taking pictures, one of the officers searching the Andersons' trash discovered an empty box that had contained expensive chocolates. 23:37 A thank you message had been included. 23:40 For being such wonderful neighbors. 23:42 Jason from Riverside Utilities. 23:45 By then we had closed off the whole street and begun checking every house. Most of the residents were away at work. We were able to confirm that the retirees and parents who stayed home were safe. although understandably frightened once we explained the situation. 24:00 Eventually, we reached the Washburn property at the end of the cul-de-sac. Joyce Washburn was a widow in her 70s who lived by herself. People knew her for her beautiful garden and the homemade jam she handed out each Christmas. 24:14 Her vehicle was parked in the driveway. The sprinklers were operating according to their usual schedule, but there was no response when we knocked. A neighbor had a spare key. The two regularly checked in on one another. 24:27 By the time we opened the door, I already had a terrible idea of what would be waiting inside. 24:33 Joyce was seated at her little kitchen table. A sandwich and a bowl of soup sat before her, neither touched. 24:40 Her hands were folded together. 24:42 Her body had been arranged in that same awful upright position. 24:46 We found the clipboard there as well. 24:49 On the counter, however, was something else. A plate of cookies accompanied by a note written by hand. 24:55 Joyce, thank you for the lovely conversation in the lemonade. Please enjoy these as a little expression of my appreciation. 25:02 Jason. 25:03 The medical examiner arrived within an hour. 25:06 While we waited, he performed an initial examination and tests on Mrs. Thompson. He saw no clear evidence that she had been attacked or had struggled with anyone. 25:16 He did notice petechial hemorrhages in her eyes, however, along with a faint bluish color around her lips. 25:22 Those findings suggested poison. He explained that certain toxic substances could paralyze a person's breathing while leaving them fully conscious for several minutes. 25:32 That would give someone enough time to arrange the victim in whatever position they chose. 25:37 Imagining those people trapped inside their own bodies, unable to move or cry out while someone set them up like dolls at their dinner tables, made me nauseated. 25:47 I stepped outside briefly to collect myself. That was when I noticed something the others had overlooked. 25:53 Beside Joyce Washburn's driveway, fresh tire impressions marked a muddy patch where the sprinklers had soaked the edge of the grass too heavily. 26:01 The pattern stood out. The vehicle had been heavy, most likely a van. 26:07 Something resembling a nail or screw was lodged in its left rear tire, leaving a little puncture impression in the mud each time the wheel turned. We promptly issued a lookout notice for a white van bearing Riverside Utilities markings and that particular tire defect. 26:22 I devoted the rest of the day and nearly all of the night to questioning residents. examining footage from the handful of homes equipped with security cameras, and reconstructing the movements of the man calling himself Jason. 26:36 The recordings we obtained gave us a clear view of him. He was of average height with brown hair and a clean-shaven face. He looked to be around 35. In every recording, he wore the blue uniform and carried the same black toolbox and clipboard. There was a slight spring to his stride that made him appear almost happy. 26:55 One camera captured him whistling as he approached the Anderson's front door. 26:59 What unsettled me most was his completely ordinary appearance. 27:03 He smiled and raised a hand to a child passing on a bicycle. He paused to pet somebody's dog. 27:10 Nothing about him suggested what he had been doing behind those doors. He remained inside each home for somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes. 27:19 In every instance, he was the final person seen going into the house before its occupants were discovered dead. 27:25 Around 3 in the morning, we finally got a break. An officer located the van in the parking lot of a grocery store about 15 miles away. Someone had set it ablaze. Rain earlier that evening had extinguished the flames before the vehicle could be destroyed completely. The vehicle identification number had been ground away. 27:45 Even so, our forensic specialists recovered partial fingerprints from a water bottle inside the cab, along with DNA from a discarded cigarette butt. 27:54 The toolbox was still in the rear of the van. Inside were vials containing what was later identified as succinylcholine, a hospital paralytic that is extremely difficult to obtain without medical credentials. 28:07 It had been combined with a slower-acting poison capable of causing death within hours. 28:12 We also recovered several blue uniforms and piles of counterfeit business cards. 28:17 The most disturbing discovery though was a notebook. It contained the addresses of dozens of older residents in three states, along with personal details about them. 28:28 Cedar Lane was only one of numerous streets accompanied by red checkmarks. 28:32 Stars had been drawn beside the names of Mrs. Thompson, both Andersons and Joyce Washburn. 28:38 The accompanying descriptions included phrases such as lives alone, trusting, and offers refreshments. 28:45 We submitted the fingerprints and DNA to every database available to us. Six hours later we received a match. 28:53 Jason's real name was Gregory Hoffman. 28:56 He had formerly worked as a hospice nurse. Five years before, he had lost his nursing license after stealing medications. 29:03 His record also included financial scams directed at elderly patients. He had been traveling through the Midwest, choosing small communities where a stranger wearing a uniform could still gain someone's confidence. 29:16 In those towns, older people who lived by themselves were likely to admit a pleasant utility employee who claimed to be checking for a gas leak or providing a free safety inspection. 29:26 Two days later, we arrested him at a motel in Nebraska. He was getting ready to target another neighborhood. 29:33 Flyers had already been distributed, and he had already introduced himself to several people he intended to approach. 29:40 When we took him into custody, he remained composed. He almost seemed pleased with himself. 29:46 The only explanation he offered was that he had been sparing those people the indignity of dying by themselves in nursing homes. 29:53 He is now serving three life sentences. but I remain certain that there are other victims we have yet to discover. 30:01 Every so often I still drive along Cedar Lane. Different families now occupy those houses, but that hasn't erased what I saw inside them. 30:09 I can still picture those people positioned at their dining tables, arranged like pieces in some deranged art exhibit. 30:16 Their final meals sat untouched before them, slowly going cold. 30:25 Story 3 Reviewing the body camera recording should have been an ordinary assignment. One more thing to get through on a Monday morning at the Phoenix precinct where I worked as a detective. 30:37 I was 32, with 8 years of patrol experience behind me and 6 months in my new role. 30:43 By then I believed I had a pretty good idea of the things this job could put in front of you. 30:49 Case folders covered my desk, most of them connected to a series of burglaries affecting the affluent neighborhoods on the city's north side. 30:57 A collection of empty coffee cups surrounded my keyboard like a miniature defensive wall. 31:03 They were the remains of too many evenings spent searching for connections that never seemed to emerge. 31:08 That morning in January 2023, almost nobody else was in the building. There was me, the overnight dispatcher completing the last of the paperwork, and the faint sound of a vacuum running somewhere farther down the corridor. 31:22 I had deliberately arrived early to go through the weekend's crime scene recordings. I hoped that looking at them with a rested mind might reveal a detail the rest of us had overlooked. 31:32 Instead, I found something that would change the way I looked at everyone working beside me. 31:37 The recording from Detective Brian Caldwell's response to the Whitmore Mansion burglary initially seemed unremarkable. 31:45 Brian had taken me under his wing when I first became a detective. 31:48 He had 15 years on the force, knew every route through the city that could save you time, and made a habit of leaving fresh donuts in the break room every Friday. 31:58 But as I watched him cross the wreck study, I felt a discomfort I couldn't immediately explain. 32:04 The first officers at the scene had already completed their preliminary search before he arrived. Brian walked past the obvious disorder. 32:12 Drawers tipped over, papers strewn across the room, a lamp broken on the floor. 32:18 He didn't begin carefully working through the disturbed areas the way we had been taught. Instead, he headed directly toward a bookcase that appeared untouched. 32:26 Without pausing, he removed one particular leather-bound atlas from the third shelf. 32:31 Behind it was a wall safe no one else had discovered. 32:35 It was the certainty of that movement that bothered me. 32:38 His hand went to precisely the right volume. He didn't scan the shelves or shift other books around. 32:45 He moved like a person reaching for something in his own house. 32:48 I played the sequence again. My coffee sat cooling beside me while an unpleasant heaviness developed in my stomach. 32:56 Then I began opening recordings from Brian's other recent investigations. I kept telling myself I was overreacting. 33:03 Maybe this was simply what 15 years of experience looked like. Perhaps he had developed instincts so sharp that he noticed things the rest of us couldn't. 33:12 The first recording I pulled up came from the burglary at Riverside Jewelry two weeks earlier. 33:17 Once again, Brian had reached the scene after the original response team. 33:21 And once again, he located something the other officers had failed to find. 33:27 A cufflink had fallen behind one of the display cabinets. It later became an important part of identifying the suspect. 33:34 On the recording, Brian went straight to that cabinet. He lowered himself at exactly the angle that allowed him to see the object wedged behind it. 33:42 There was no orderly inspection of the room, no search grid, none of the approach we had learned at the academy. 33:49 Next, I watched his response to the break-in at the Hammond house. In that case, he found part of a fingerprint on the inner surface of a window frame, a print the crime scene technicians had somehow missed. 34:01 It was getting harder to explain away what I was seeing. 34:04 Each recording supplied another piece of an image I desperately didn't want to finish putting together. 34:10 For a moment, my hands hovered over the keyboard. Brian meant more to me than just another detective in the squad. He had taught me how to record evidence properly. 34:20 During my first week in the position, he had covered for me after I made a beginner's mistake. But none of that changed the footage in front of me. 34:28 I opened the department's case closure figures for the previous year and compared them with the investigations Brian had worked. The results left my mouth and throat dry. 34:38 Every investigation in which Brian had uncovered one of these astonishing bits of evidence had been resolved within a matter of days. 34:46 Usually the accused either confessed almost at once or accepted a plea agreement. 34:51 The cases that didn't involve him meanwhile often stayed open for weeks or even months. 34:56 I unlocked my desk drawer and took out the personal notebook I kept inside. Then I started recording what I had found, squeezing case numbers and video timestamps onto the pages in my small crowded handwriting. 35:09 Above me, the fluorescent fixtures hummed and intermittently flickered. The changing light threw odd shadows over the papers covering my desk. 35:17 To take the next step I would need records I wasn't authorized to access. But I knew Donna, the records clerk, usually arrived early on Mondays to work through the filing backlog. 35:27 She also owed me a favor. 35:29 The previous fall I had covered for her while her daughter underwent emergency surgery. I located her downstairs in the archives, surrounded by stacks of manila folders and the stale, dusty scent of aging paper. 35:42 When I requested the evidence logs connected to Brian's investigations, one of her eyebrows rose. 35:48 Still, she retrieved them without asking me to explain. 35:52 What those records showed made my heartbeat accelerate. In every case where Brian had turned up an essential piece of evidence, he had been the final person to enter the evidence room on the night before that discovery. 36:04 The access logs placed him there after midnight. He typically remained inside for 30 to 45 minutes, and every visit took place while Officer Ramirez was assigned to the security desk. 36:16 Ramirez had a reputation for sleeping through his shifts. 36:20 The separate details were beginning to fit together, and the picture they formed was worse than anything I wanted to believe. 36:27 I continued investigating for the remainder of the morning. As I uncovered more, my initial discomfort became actual fear. 36:35 A contact in financial crimes helped me obtain Brian's banking records without asking many questions. 36:41 The accounts showed payments his police salary couldn't explain. $5,000 in one deposit, $8,000 in another. 36:49 The money always arrived within a week of one of his remarkable evidence discoveries. 36:54 Different limited liability companies made the deposits. 36:58 Their names were deliberately bland. Consulting Solutions Group, Professional Services, and others liked them. 37:06 A brief search showed that those businesses were registered to a private investigation firm owned by Anthony Reeves. 37:13 Reeves was a former officer who had departed the department five years earlier under questionable circumstances. 37:20 He was known for delivering results to clients willing to pay substantial amounts. 37:24 Some wanted stolen possessions returned. Others needed something they could use against a spouse during a bitter divorce. 37:32 My stomach twisted as I began to understand. Brian wasn't merely uncovering evidence. He was putting it there. He was also passing information about our cases to criminals and private investigators who benefited from knowing where our inquiries were headed. 37:47 At approximately noon, his familiar laugh carried out of the break room. Every muscle in my body tightened. He was talking with several other detectives about the approaching Super Bowl, sounding entirely relaxed. 38:00 I remained at my desk, surrounded by material that could end his career. 38:05 But patterns, access logs, and unexplained money weren't enough for what I needed to do. 38:11 I needed to capture him actually placing evidence at a scene or meeting Anthony Reeves. 38:16 That evening, I waited in my battered Toyota Camry on the opposite side of the street from the precinct's parking garage. 38:23 At 6 o'clock, Brian came out as though the day had been no different from any other. He was whistling an older rock tune, and his badge remained attached to his belt. 38:32 He climbed into his silver Ford Explorer and drove through downtown. 38:37 Several of his turns served no obvious purpose. I recognized what he was doing. He was checking whether anyone was following him. 38:45 My hands grew damp against the steering wheel. I kept three vehicles between us and relied on every surveillance method I had learned. 38:53 Eventually, he entered the parking garage connected to the Marriott on Central Avenue. 38:58 I left my car two floors above him and came down the stairwell, feeling my heart pound against my ribs with every step. 39:05 From behind the concrete columns, I saw him approach a man wearing an expensive suit, Anthony Reeves. 39:12 He looked much like the old department photograph I had found, except his hair had gone grayer. A gold watch on his wrist reflected the severe overhead lighting. 39:21 The two men stood in the gap between a pair of SUVs. Brian passed him something that appeared to be a flash drive. I pulled out my phone and started recording. 39:31 My hands were trembling enough that I nearly lost my grip on it twice. 39:35 They spoke too softly for me to make out the whole conversation. But several fragments reached me. 39:42 Tomorrow's raid... 39:44 Evidence room at 2 a.m. and a remark about ensuring that the Morrison kid took the blame. 39:50 Reeves then gave Brian an envelope thick enough to suggest it was filled with cash. They shook hands with the easy familiarity of longtime friends finishing a business transaction. 40:01 After Reeves left in his vehicle, Brian remained in the garage for another 10 minutes. He made a phone call and paced back and forth between the yellow lines painted on the concrete. 40:11 I stayed concealed behind a support pillar, trying to breathe as quietly as possible. 40:17 My phone kept recording until he finally drove away. 40:20 That night, sleep felt impossible. 40:23 Whenever a car went past my apartment, I startled. wondering whether Brian had somehow realized I was investigating him. 40:30 I spread everything across my kitchen table. There were printed images from the recordings, copies of the banking information, the notes I had made by hand, and my phone containing the video from the parking structure. 40:43 The sensible thing would have been to take all of it directly to internal affairs. 40:48 But Brian had connections throughout the department. 40:51 Some of those people had served alongside him for more than 10 years. They would find it almost impossible to accept that he was corrupt. 40:59 I needed evidence no one could dismiss, something that would leave them no choice but to respond at once. 41:05 Then I thought again about the raid he had mentioned. I opened the departmental schedule on my laptop and located it. At dawn, officers were due to raid a suspected drug property on Oak Street. Brian would be in charge of the team. If he intended to arrange false evidence at 2 in the morning, I needed to be there to record him doing it. 41:25 I set an alarm for 1.30, put my service pistol on the bedside table, and stretched out in bed. 41:31 I stared upward into the darkness, watching the hours pass in my mind. 41:36 At 2 a.m., the evidence room should have been deserted apart from the guard posted nearby. 41:41 When I returned to the precinct, I left my car a block from the building and used my access card to enter through a side door. 41:48 Only the emergency lights illuminated the corridors. Their dim glow made the surroundings look gray and strangely misshapen. 41:56 As I headed toward the basement where the evidence was stored, the sound of my breathing seemed to travel through the empty hallways. 42:02 Brian's explorer was there, parked in the rear lot. and Ramirez, exactly as I had expected, was asleep at the security station. 42:10 His head leaned backward and quiet snores broke the stillness. 42:14 I slipped past him and continued down the stairs, filming with my phone as I went. 42:19 The evidence room door had been left slightly open. Through that narrow gap I could see Brian. 42:25 A duffel bag sat beside him. He was carefully transferring bags containing what appeared to be cocaine into evidence boxes bearing labels for the upcoming raid. 42:35 Latex gloves covered his hands. 42:37 He had also switched off the security camera. Its red recording indicator was dark. 42:43 My throat became so dry it felt scraped raw. 42:47 I watched him continue with slow, deliberate care. He even photographed the drugs he was planting, making sure they would be found in the intended places. 42:56 At that point I knew I had what I needed, but I couldn't wait until he completed the job and removed every sign of his involvement. 43:03 With fingers that wouldn't stop shaking, I sent the recording straight to Captain Rebecca Walsh's personal email address. 43:10 She was the one member of the command staff I trusted without reservation. 43:14 I had worked with her during her time in internal affairs. Then I made another decision, one that may well have kept me alive. 43:22 I began streaming the rest of what I was filming to a private cloud account. That way the recording would be stored as it happened. 43:30 Brian must have picked up a sound. He stopped moving. 43:34 Then he turned toward the entrance. For one horrifying instant, we looked directly at each other through the opening. 43:40 I watched recognition change his face. 43:43 The initial surprise vanished, replaced by a cold, assessing expression. 43:48 He let go of the evidence bag and moved his hand toward his service weapon. 43:52 But I was already running. 43:54 I raced down the hallway yelling for Ramirez to wake up. Brian came out of the evidence room behind me. I heard him shouting that I was stealing evidence. Even then he was trying to turn the situation around and make me the one at fault. But Ramirez had seen the drugs filling Brian's bag. He had seen Brian emerge from a room where he had no business being at that hour. 44:16 And most crucially, Captain Walsh was already summoning assistance. Within 20 minutes, internal affairs personnel and FBI agents filled the precinct. 44:25 I learned afterward that Brian had been under suspicion for months. The investigators simply hadn't been able to establish anything solid enough to prove what he was doing. 44:35 My recordings and the records I had collected supplied the proof they had been missing. 44:39 At first, Brian continued insisting he had done nothing wrong. He claimed I had arranged the whole thing to incriminate him. 44:47 Then investigators discovered three additional burner phones inside his vehicle. They also found a comprehensive record of his payments and transactions concealed in his garage. 44:57 After that, he stopped talking. 45:00 The inquiry that followed exposed four more officers working in separate precincts. 45:05 All of them had been collaborating with Reeves, altering investigations in exchange for money. 45:10 Seventeen cases needed to be opened again. In three of those cases, innocent people had already been convicted because of evidence someone had planted. 45:20 Brian received 15 years in federal prison. 45:23 Reeves was sentenced to 20. 45:25 I received a commendation. 45:27 It felt empty when I thought about all the lives that had been damaged. 45:31 I continue to work at the same precinct, but I examine body camera recordings differently now. 45:37 I pay attention to things I once might have explained away, because I know the person wearing the badge can sometimes be the criminal you need to find. As for the Morrison kid Brian intended to frame, he was 19 years old and attending college. He had never even received a parking ticket. 45:54 That is the part that stays with me most. Not only what Brian had already done, but what he nearly managed to do next. 46:02 And how easily it could have happened if I hadn't sat down to review those recordings on an otherwise quiet Monday morning. 46:13 Story 4. 46:15 The dispatcher's voice came through my radio at 9.47 p.m., broken by static, and something in her tone immediately made my hands tighten around the steering wheel. 46:25 After six months of patrolling the suburbs outside Portland, you started developing a sense for the calls that were going to stay with you. 46:33 A 67-year-old woman named Margaret Hobbs had called from 4782 Willow Court. 46:39 In a whisper, she had told the dispatcher that someone was inside her home. 46:44 Then, according to dispatch, she had stopped speaking halfway through a sentence. 46:48 Not a gradual pause, just an abrupt silence, as though somebody had pulled the words out of her throat. 46:55 The connection remained open for another 40 seconds. There was nothing on the line except what sounded like a television airing a game show, the audience's laughter carrying through an otherwise silent room. 47:07 Margaret had lived by herself since losing her husband two years earlier. She was one of those widows who mostly stayed out of everyone's way but still lifted a hand whenever a patrol car passed. 47:18 Oregon evenings turned cold quickly in October. 47:21 I remember raising the heater as I drove onto her street, imagining her concealed somewhere inside that house, frightened and waiting for someone to reach her. 47:31 Even before I arrived at the driveway, the cul-de-sac looked wrong. The other homes had their usual porch lamps glowing, those gentle amber lights that make a suburban neighborhood feel sheltered from the rest of the world. 47:44 Margaret's house was lit up like a signal flare. Brilliant white light filled every window. 47:50 The basement windows were illuminated. So were the attic windows, the ones people almost never bothered using. 47:57 The building was a split level from the 70s, covered in an ugly mustard yellow paint that had faded into a color somewhere between beige and rot. 48:05 Her front door stood open by about six inches. 48:09 It moved slightly with the wind back and forth, almost as though the house were breathing. 48:14 I requested backup over the radio. Dispatch told me I would have to wait at least 20 minutes. 48:20 A multiple vehicle collision on Highway 26 had tied up everyone available. 48:25 Procedure said you waited for another officer before entering a possible home invasion, but we were also supposed to protect and serve, and Margaret Hobbs needed somebody to protect her immediately. 48:37 I could hear the television from inside my cruiser. 48:40 A host was asking questions about presidents and capital cities. 48:44 Beneath his voice was another sound. Dripping. 48:48 Regular measured drops, keeping time like a metronome. 48:52 I got out with my flashlight in one hand and the other close to my holster. 48:57 Standing in the driveway, I called toward the house. 49:00 Police, Margaret Hobbs. This is Officer Price. I'm responding to your call. 49:06 My words carried along the vacant street and returned with an echo that reminded me of a cave. 49:12 The neighboring houses remained dark and silent beyond their porch lights. Nobody appeared at a window. Nobody opened a door to find out why a police officer was shouting outside. 49:23 That should have told me something was badly wrong. 49:26 Willow Court was a neighborhood where people paid attention to one another. Under normal circumstances, a cruiser stopping outside a house would bring at least three worried neighbors onto their porches and bathrobes. 49:38 That night, the entire street seemed to be holding its breath. 49:41 I advanced toward the entrance, taking my time. There was no visible damage around the frame, no fractured wood, no signs that anyone had forced the lock with a tool. 49:52 Either somebody had used a key, or the door had never been locked. 49:57 Through the opening I could see the living room. Blue light from the television shifted across a beige carpet and floral wallpaper that looked as though it had been there since the place was constructed. 50:07 As soon as I pushed the door farther inward I noticed the smell. 50:11 Pot roast was still cooking somewhere. 50:13 Mixed with it was a sharp chemical scent I couldn't identify. 50:17 It was close to the smell of household cleaners, but there was something off about it. 50:23 Margaret Hobbs, police. I'm entering to make sure you're all right. 50:27 I crossed the threshold. The door slammed behind me with enough force to make me nearly jump out of my skin. 50:34 The wind, I told myself, except I knew perfectly well that the air outside had been motionless. 50:39 The living room was tidy, although clearly used. It had the preserved, unchanging appearance you sometimes find in an older person's home. 50:48 Laced doilies covered the furniture. Heavy picture frames held photographs of grandchildren. Ceramic angels stood in a collection along the mantle. 50:58 Jeopardy! was on the television. Alex Trebek was reading questions to a room with nobody in it. 51:04 An open TV guide rested on the coffee table, turned to that day's programs. 51:09 Folded reading glasses lay across the pages. 51:12 Beside them was a cup of tea. It was still steaming. 51:16 The teabag string hung over the edge, giving the impression that someone had prepared it only moments earlier. 51:22 I continued toward the kitchen. 51:24 With each step the dripping became clearer. 51:27 Then I saw the dining table and stopped. 51:30 Three places had been set. 51:32 Only one plate contained dinner. Pot roast, mashed potatoes, and green beans, all partly eaten. A fork stood upright in the meat, as though the person using it had been interrupted in the middle of taking a bite. 51:45 The remaining two plates were spotless and unused, but the utensils had been positioned differently beside each one. 51:52 At the first empty setting, the knife and fork crossed to form an X. 51:56 At the other, they rested side by side, lined up with exact precision. 52:01 Steam continued to lift from the meal. 52:04 I brushed the back of my hand against the edge of the plate. It was hot enough that I pulled my hand away. The telephone on the kitchen wall had been left off the hook. Its receiver hung from the coiled cord, moving a little despite the lack of any breeze inside. 52:19 I lifted it and heard a dial tone. Then I saw something that made my chest constrict. 52:25 About three feet below the handset, the cord had been severed cleanly, and yet the dial tone continued. The kitchen tap was responsible for the dripping. 52:35 Each drop struck the stainless steel sink with a metallic ping that sounded far too loud in the quiet. 52:41 I closed the faucet. 52:43 Only then did I hear the footsteps. They were directly overhead, slow steps taken with purpose as though someone were walking back and forth. 52:53 Police, come downstairs and keep your hands where I can see them. 52:57 The movement stopped at once. I pulled my firearm and headed for the staircase. 53:02 Every nerve seemed to be telling me that there was something deeply wrong with that house. 53:07 The steps groaned beneath my boots. 53:09 Usually that sound in an old home feels familiar and almost comforting. 53:14 Now it felt as though I were announcing exactly where I was. 53:18 Partway up, I noticed the framed family pictures hanging along the wall. Margaret and her husband at different stages of their lives. Their children. Their grandchildren. 53:29 In every photograph, Margaret's face had been scraped away with something sharp. Jagged openings marked the glass where her eyes should have been. 53:37 Small, fresh fragments of glass crunched beneath my feet. 53:40 Someone had done this recently, possibly while I had been downstairs. 53:45 The upper hallway seemed to run farther than a house of that size should have allowed. Four doors stood on either side. All were shut except one at the distant end. That room shone with the same stark white light I had seen from the street. From inside it came what sounded like a woman humming. 54:02 The sound was quiet and without any recognizable melody. 54:06 I identified myself again. The humming carried on as though I hadn't spoken. 54:11 I began checking the rooms carefully, one at a time. 54:15 The guest bedroom had a layer of dust over every surface. In the bathroom, the medicine cabinet hung open. 54:21 Bottles of pills were scattered around the sink. 54:25 The sewing room looked stranger still. 54:27 Every length of thread had been unwound from its spool and drawn into one enormous tangled mass on the floor. 54:33 The main bedroom was locked from the inside with an old push button lock. 54:38 I put my ear against the door. 54:40 Nothing. 54:41 Meanwhile, the humming from the room at the end of the hall never paused. Its pitch didn't change. Neither did its rhythm. 54:49 It sounded like a recording repeating endlessly. 54:52 When I reached the final doorway, I pushed the door the rest of the way open with my foot and kept my gun raised. 54:58 The room had been Margaret's husband's study. 55:01 Apparently, she had preserved it just as he had left it. 55:05 Medical journals were piled on the desk, and a stethoscope hung over the back of a chair. From what I could see, he had been a doctor. 55:13 The humming came from a cassette player on a bookshelf, an old 80s model with silver control buttons. But it was the wall behind the desk that made me call over the radio and demand backup immediately. 55:25 Someone had covered it with the same sentence, written repeatedly in what appeared to be black marker. 55:31 The words extended from the floor to the ceiling. 55:34 Toward the edges, the writing grew tighter, smaller, and increasingly frantic. 55:39 She's still on the phone, over and over, hundreds of repetitions, maybe thousands. 55:47 The marker lay uncapped on the desk. Its point was still wet. 55:51 I pressed the eject button on the cassette player. 55:55 The humming stopped. 55:57 In the silence that followed, I became aware of something else. 56:00 Breathing. 56:02 Slow, controlled breaths coming from somewhere nearby. 56:05 I turned quickly, sweeping every corner of the room. There was nobody there. 56:10 But the breathing didn't stop. Then, with a sickening realization, I understood where it was coming from. 56:17 The heating vent in the floor. I knelt and aimed my flashlight between the openings in the grate, bringing my face close enough to feel the cold metal. 56:26 Approximately three feet down inside the duct, two eyes reflected the light. 56:31 They were open wide. They didn't blink. 56:34 Then they disappeared. 56:36 A rapid crawling sound followed, with banging and scraping against the metal ductwork that seemed to carry throughout the whole house. 56:43 I recoiled and spoke into my radio. 56:46 Possible suspect inside the ventilation system. I need backup immediately. We may also need the fire department to get into the crawl space. 56:55 The dispatcher said the responding units were five minutes away. 56:59 Those eyes had not looked deranged. They hadn't looked aggressive either. They had looked frightened, as though the person inside the duct was hiding from something other than me. 57:10 I hurried downstairs to find the basement entrance. That was when I discovered the kitchen had changed. 57:16 The dinner plates were no longer on the table. They had been brought to the sink, washed and placed in the drying rack. The roast had disappeared. The stove was off. 57:27 Everything had been cleaned and returned to its place as though nobody had prepared or eaten a meal there at all. 57:34 The telephone sat properly in its cradle. 57:37 I picked up the handset and examined the cord. 57:40 It was whole. There was no cut, no damage, and no indication that it had ever been anything but intact. 57:47 The radio crackled. 57:49 Dispatch wanted an update on my situation. 57:52 Before I could reply, I heard the front door open on the level above me. 57:56 I had used the rear staircase which brought me directly into the kitchen. 58:01 Someone walked through the living room. The footsteps were unhurried and evenly spaced. Then a woman spoke. I heard every word. 58:10 Yes, I'd like to report someone in my house. He's in the kitchen right now. 58:15 I went cold all over. I recognized the voice from the original emergency call. 58:20 Margaret Hobbs. 58:22 Keeping my weapon out, I moved toward the living room and announced who I was once more. But when I came around the corner, no one was there. 58:30 The television had been switched off. 58:32 So had the lights. 58:34 Through the window, I saw the backup vehicles entering the driveway. Red and blue flashes moved across the walls. 58:41 On the coffee table, however, the same cup of tea continued to steam. 58:45 A note had been placed beside it. The handwriting matched the words covering the wall upstairs. 58:51 She never left the phone. 58:53 We spent three hours searching that property. Two more units arrived. A K-9 team joined us. The fire department came with thermal imaging equipment. Nobody was found in the ventilation system. There was no clear evidence that anyone had occupied it, apart from disturbed dust that could have dated back decades. 59:13 The basement was secured from the outside with a padlock that appeared to have rusted shut years earlier. 59:19 Margaret Hobbs was nowhere in the house. She wasn't with a neighbor. She wasn't at a hospital. She wasn't visiting her daughter in Seattle. Her vehicle remained in the garage. 59:31 Her keys hung on their usual hook beside the door. Her purse sat on the counter with the wallet still inside. 59:37 Her daughter drove down that night. She identified the reading glasses as her mother's. She recognized the teacup. 59:45 She even told us that pot roast was what Margaret normally prepared for dinner on Mondays. 59:50 Then she said something that made the rest of us look at one another. 59:54 Lately, her mother had been struggling with her memory. There had been spells of confusion. 59:59 At times, she seemed to believe her husband was still living. 60:03 Sometimes she made dinner for him. 60:05 We secured the house as a possible crime scene. 60:08 At three in the morning, I finally went home. I tried to convince myself that Margaret might have wandered away. 60:15 Perhaps she had become confused during an episode and was somewhere in the neighborhood, unable to find her way back. 60:21 Roughly four hours later, at 7.23 a.m., I was standing in my kitchen making coffee when my cell phone rang. 60:29 Dispatch. 60:30 The tiredness I had heard in her voice earlier was gone, replaced by something harder to identify. Disbelief. Possibly fear. 60:39 Another emergency call had just come from Margaret Hobbs' house. It was the same woman's voice. The same hushed report that an intruder was inside. But the house had been sealed with crime scene tape. An officer had remained outside throughout the night. He insisted that nobody had entered or left. 60:58 Even so, the call had unquestionably originated inside the property. They had traced it to the landline. 61:05 I returned to Willow Court and met the sergeant who had been there the night before. 61:09 This time we went inside together. 61:12 The interior was precisely as we had left it. The tape had not been disturbed. 61:17 The evidence markers were still where we had placed them. 61:20 Except the telephone was off its hook. Its receiver dangled from the cord, just as it had when I first entered. 61:27 We listened to the recording of the new 911 call. Margaret's voice was unmistakable. 61:33 But there was another voice behind hers. 61:36 Mine. 61:37 It sounded distant and echoed as though someone were replaying what I had said hours earlier. 61:42 Margaret Hobbs, police. I'm entering to make sure you're all right. 61:47 The call continued for exactly 40 seconds, matching the first one. Then there was nothing but dead air. 61:54 We never located Margaret Hobbs. After six months, her daughter had her formally declared missing. After two years, she had her declared legally dead. 62:04 For a time, the home remained vacant. 62:06 Eventually, the daughter sold it to a young couple from California. They paid considerably less than the property should have been worth. 62:14 I continued watching the place. Now and then I passed it while covering my patrol route. The couple stayed for eight months. Then they moved away. 62:24 They said their telephone kept ringing in the middle of the night. When they answered, no one spoke. 62:30 They could only hear a television playing somewhere in the background. The family who moved in after them stayed four months. 62:37 The house has now been listed for sale for three years. 62:40 Privately, the real estate agent told me that buyers who toured it always asked about the telephone ringing during their visits. 62:47 Its service had been disconnected years earlier. 62:50 The department ultimately closed the investigation, classifying it as a missing person case involving a probable disappearance related to dementia. 62:59 But those of us who entered that house know the official explanation doesn't account for what happened there. 63:05 I work at another precinct these days. 63:08 I transferred to daytime duty downtown, where the calls concern things I can recognize and understand. 63:14 Robberies, traffic accidents, domestic arguments. 63:19 Still, there are evenings when I'm finishing reports after dark and the station has gone quiet. 63:24 Our emergency line will ring. The dispatcher will answer, but the caller won't say anything. 63:30 They remain connected for precisely 40 seconds. Then the call ends. 63:35 Tracing the numbers leads to disconnected phone lines, old homes, addresses that should no longer be capable of making outgoing calls. 63:44 Last week, one of those calls came from Margaret Hobbs' former number. The dispatcher who answered was new. 63:51 He hadn't been working there when we searched her house. 63:54 He said he could hear a voice whispering. 63:57 The words were too faint for him to understand. 64:00 All he could tell was that it sounded like an elderly woman asking someone to help her. 64:05 I told him it was most likely a fault in the system. 64:08 Sometimes old numbers go through the telephone network, but I know Margaret is still attempting to finish the call she started that night, still trying to explain who had entered her home. 64:19 Or perhaps she is trying to tell us that whoever was inside never really went away. 64:28 Story 5 I was 23 and had only recently graduated from the Academy when I was assigned to work with Detective Emily Harris in 2012. 64:38 Behind her back, people referred to her as the Bulldog. It wasn't because she treated anyone badly. 64:45 It was because once she sank her teeth into an investigation, there was almost nothing that could make her release it. 64:51 For roughly three months, I had followed her through assignments involving minor thefts and domestic arguments. 64:57 None of them had pushed either of us very far. Then on a muggy Saturday morning near the beginning of July, we were sent to an apartment building on the north side of town. 65:07 The property had originally been a warehouse, built sometime in the 1940s. 65:13 It had since been converted into apartments with exposed brickwork and large industrial windows. 65:19 Young professionals liked places like that. They said the old construction gave them character. 65:25 Dispatch described the death as a possible suicide. Emily listened with that familiar narrowing of her eyes, the expression she got when something about a call didn't sit right. 65:36 Sometimes it seemed as though she could detect a problem through the radio itself. 65:41 The apartment's occupant was Kevin Brewster. 65:44 He was 28 and worked as a graphic designer for a startup downtown. 65:48 His employer had called the building superintendent after Kevin failed to come to work for three consecutive days. 65:54 The superintendent went to check on him and discovered the body. 65:58 By the time we arrived, uniformed officers and members of the medical examiner's team were already crowding the corridor. 66:05 The odor was the first thing I noticed. It had that sickening sweetness that seems to cling to the inside of your nose long after you leave a scene. 66:13 Emily showed no reaction. She put on her gloves and bent beneath the yellow tape. 66:19 Kevin's front door had an expensive electronic lock, operated by programmed access codes rather than a standard key. 66:27 The superintendent was adamant that it had been locked from the inside when he got there. 66:32 He said he had needed his master override to open it. 66:35 Kevin lay stretched across the living room floor. He was still dressed in what appeared to be the clothes he had worn to work several days before. Khaki trousers and a button-down shirt with a technology company's emblem stitched onto the pocket. 66:49 Dr. Patel, the medical examiner, was crouching beside him when we entered. 66:54 He tended to hum classical pieces while examining a body. 66:58 I had never gotten used to it. 67:00 Something about hearing those quiet melodies at a death scene made everything feel even less real. 67:06 From where I stood, there were no visible injuries. No blood collected beneath him. No marks around his throat. 67:13 Nothing immediately suggested that anyone had attacked him. 67:17 He almost looked as though he had chosen to lie down on the hardwood for a nap and simply never gotten up again. 67:23 Emily, however, was already inspecting the apartment with the focus of a tracking dog. 67:28 She checked the surfaces, the corners, and the small details I probably would have walked past. 67:34 At the kitchen counter, she paused beside a partially eaten carton of Chinese food and an empty beer bottle. 67:40 Mold had begun spreading over the meal. 67:42 Furry patches of white and green covered parts of it, and looking at them made my stomach churn. 67:48 Emily photographed all of it. She photographed the way Kevin was lying, the placement of his hands, and even the fact that only one side of his shirt had come untucked. 67:59 That was when the woman from the neighboring apartment appeared in the hallway. Mrs. Kowalich looked as though she might burst if somebody didn't let her talk. She was probably around 70. Her housecoat was patterned with cartoon cats, and the slippers on her feet looked as though their best years had belonged to another decade. 68:17 When we stepped outside to speak with her, she immediately caught Emily by the arm. Her grip was unexpectedly powerful. 68:25 I heard them arguing, she told us. 68:28 Her Polish accent grew stronger with the mixture of nervousness and excitement in her voice. 68:33 Three nights ago, around 11 I think, Kevin and somebody else, they were shouting so loudly I could hear them through these old walls. 68:42 She was certain she had heard two separate voices. Both belonged to men. 68:47 Around midnight, she said, Kevin's door slammed. 68:51 Afterward, heavy footsteps traveled down the corridor toward the stairwell, sounding like someone walking in boots. 68:57 Then she added the detail that changed Emily's expression. 69:01 After that night, Mrs. Kowalich had never heard Kevin's door open or shut again. She insisted she would have noticed. 69:08 Her apartment was directly beside his, and since her husband's death, she hardly slept anymore. 69:14 Emily spent the following hour talking to everyone who lived on that floor. 69:19 While she did, I returned to Kevin's apartment and examined it more thoroughly. 69:24 His laptop had been left open on the desk at the login screen, its battery long since drained. 69:30 Work was scattered around it. Proposed logos, website layouts, and business card designs for different customers. 69:37 One card stood out because of the costly paper it had been printed on. 69:41 It was for a law office called Mitchell & Associates. 69:45 I placed it in an evidence bag, along with the other items that seemed worth collecting. 69:50 The bathroom cabinet contained the kinds of medications you might expect to find. 69:54 Ibuprofen, allergy tablets, a prescription for antidepressants dated six months earlier. 70:01 But the most striking thing about the apartment was the lack of anything pointing to a confrontation. There was no disturbance suggesting a struggle. 70:10 Looking more closely at Kevin's hands, I found no defensive injuries. Every window was secured from the inside. 70:17 The apartment was on the fourth floor and there was no fire escape. 70:21 As far as we could establish, that electronically locked front door was the only entrance or exit. 70:27 The building's security equipment was practically useless. 70:30 There was one camera in the lobby. The superintendent admitted it had stopped working two weeks before Kevin's death. 70:38 Emily was not willing to let that bring the investigation to a halt. She requested the access history from the company that manufactured the electronic lock. 70:47 That was where the case began getting truly strange. The lock's stored records showed Kevin's personal code being used at 7.43 p.m. three nights earlier. 70:57 After that, there was nothing. 70:59 The next entry was the superintendent's override at 10.15am on the morning the body was discovered. 71:05 No additional access codes had been entered. No attempts to force the mechanism had been registered. There was simply an empty stretch between those two events. 71:15 The technician sent by the lock company was a nervous young man named Bradley. He kept adjusting his glasses, pushing them back up the bridge of his nose as he explained the system. 71:26 According to him, the locks were designed to resist tampering. An attempt to hack one or manipulate it with a keycard reader should have appeared in the recorded history. There were no such entries. 71:37 Emily made him run the check three separate times. Then she had his supervisor come to the building and confirm the findings. 71:45 The electronic record said nobody had entered or exited Kevin's apartment after 7.43 that evening. 71:51 That time corresponded with when he was likely to have returned from work. 71:55 Two days later, the autopsy findings came in. 71:58 When Dr. Patel called Emily, he sounded honestly baffled. Kevin's heart had stopped. That was the cause of death. 72:07 But he was a healthy 28-year-old with no known cardiac condition. The toxicology examination offered something more troubling. There were traces of an artificial compound in his system that Patel couldn't identify immediately. It didn't match any of the ordinary drugs or poisons listed in their database. He forwarded samples to a specialist laboratory in Chicago and warned us that an answer would take at least a week. 72:32 In the meantime, Emily had me work through Kevin's personal history as though we were carefully excavating his life. 72:39 His financial record showed a steady stream of payments for freelance design jobs. Most of the activity was ordinary. One transaction was not. 72:49 Two weeks before he died, Kevin had withdrawn $8,000 in cash. None of the friends we questioned could tell us what he needed it for. His closest friend, Jamie, said Kevin had recently begun acting as though someone might be watching him. 73:03 When they went out together, he constantly checked the area around them. Sometimes he canceled their plans with almost no warning. 73:10 We also located Natalie, his former girlfriend. She was a nurse at the local hospital and hadn't seen Kevin for several months. But when she described what had happened before their breakup, Emily's posture changed immediately. 73:24 Approximately six months earlier, Kevin had started dealing with a group of men who promised they could build up his design business. 73:31 They claimed they would help him secure work from larger companies. 73:35 Natalie had never met any of them. 73:37 Kevin sometimes went out late at night to attend meetings though, and when he returned he was usually strained and unusually quiet. 73:45 On one occasion she noticed a message on his phone. The sender was saved under a single letter. 73:51 M. The message said, you'd better come through or we'll deal with this another way. 73:57 She asked Kevin about it. The conversation turned into a serious argument. Not long afterward, their relationship ended. 74:05 Natalie remained worried and tried calling him several times after the breakup. He never called her back. Her last attempt was about a month before his death. By then, his voicemail was full. 74:17 Eventually, the Chicago laboratory identified the substance Dr. Patel had found. 74:22 It was a variation of succinylcholine, a paralytic used in hospitals during surgical procedures. 74:29 But this particular form had somehow been altered. 74:32 It broke down more rapidly inside the body, making it more difficult to detect. 74:37 Patel explained that an injection could leave a person unable to move while remaining completely aware for perhaps 10 to 15 minutes. 74:45 Then their respiratory system would fail. 74:48 I pictured Kevin on the floor, conscious of what was happening but incapable of calling out or moving even a finger. 74:55 The thought made me feel physically ill. 74:58 There was one major problem with that explanation, however. His body had no injection site. Dr. Patel examined every possible location. He checked between Kevin's toes. He checked beneath the hairline. There was no mark anywhere. 75:13 That left oral ingestion as the only explanation. The substance had probably been introduced into something Kevin drank or ate. 75:21 Emily immediately returned to the Chinese takeout and the beer, but the restaurant investigation turned up nothing wrong. 75:28 The bottle was also a brand Kevin routinely purchased at the convenience store on the corner. 75:33 Then a development came along that seemed at first like the break we had been waiting for. 75:38 Vincent Russo was arrested for assault following a fight in a bar. 75:43 When his fingerprints were processed a connection to Kevin surfaced. Years earlier the two men had attended the same community college. During questioning Vincent admitted that someone had paid him to deliver a warning about a debt Kevin owed. 75:56 He claimed he had visited Kevin's apartment that night with another man, Tommy Garza. 76:02 They had only intended to frighten him. 76:04 According to Vincent, the argument concerned a work Kevin had promised to do. 76:09 He had agreed to use his design skills to produce false identification and other fraudulent documents. 76:15 Vincent said Kevin had accepted the $8,000 as an advance, then become nervous about the arrangement and tried to withdraw. He maintained that they had done little more than shout at Kevin. 76:27 Maybe they had shoved him a few times. 76:29 But when they left, he said, Kevin was definitely alive. 76:34 Vincent also suggested that Tommy might have dropped something into Kevin's beer when his attention was elsewhere. Just something to mess with him. 76:42 Nothing that should have caused his death. 76:44 Then the story started coming apart. Tommy Garza had a documented alibi. 76:50 On the night in question, he was being held in Indiana following an arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 76:58 He remained in custody until two days after Kevin died. 77:02 Over the next hour, Vincent gave us three different versions of what had happened. Initially, he said they had departed at midnight. Then he changed the time to 11.30. 77:12 Eventually, he claimed he wasn't certain he had visited Kevin's apartment at all. 77:17 His attorney arrived and ended the questioning. 77:20 Without anything physical that placed him inside the apartment, we had no choice but to release him. 77:25 The fingerprints recovered from the rooms belonged only to Kevin. 77:29 DNA taken from the beer bottle and the food containers also matched Kevin and nobody else. 77:35 Even recordings from hallway cameras in the neighboring building failed to help us. 77:39 Those cameras captured part of the entrance to Kevin's building. 77:43 During the period Mrs. Kowalich described, they showed no one arriving or leaving. 77:48 Emily examined hours of recording, advancing through it one frame at a time until her eyes were red. 77:55 Again and again she muttered that there had to have been another person in that apartment. The woman next door had heard the argument. She had heard the door. She had heard someone walking away. 78:06 But nothing we could collect supported her account. 78:09 Six months after Kevin's death, the investigation went cold. Emily never truly accepted that. 78:16 Even after I moved to another precinct, she continued looking into it. Occasionally she called me to discuss a fresh possibility. Perhaps somebody had crossed from one balcony to another. Perhaps an additional access code had been used and then removed from the lock's memory. Perhaps someone at the lock company had helped conceal what happened. Every idea eventually led nowhere. 78:39 Two years later, Vincent Russo was killed in a motorcycle crash. Whatever he had actually known about Kevin's death died with him. Tommy Garza vanished altogether. There were rumors that he had gone to Mexico, but nothing more definite. 78:54 Eventually, the apartment building removed the electronic locks and installed ordinary deadbolts. 78:59 Two additional tenants had reported problems with the electronic system before that decision was made. 79:05 Mrs. Kowalich died in 2016. 79:08 Until the end, she remained certain about the sounds she had heard that night. 79:12 Emily retired in 2018. At the party held for her retirement, after she had had a few drinks, she told me that Kevin Brewster's case was the investigation she would carry with her for the rest of her life. 79:25 It wasn't what we had discovered that troubled her most. It was everything we had failed to account for. 79:31 How could someone enter an apartment that was locked, administer poison to the man inside, and leave without producing one piece of evidence that they had ever been there? 79:41 I still think about that whenever I pass the old warehouse building. And even now I find myself wondering what really took place inside apartment 4B on that July night in 2012. 79:57 STORY 6 After 12 years in law enforcement, I believed I had already encountered just about everything our small Pennsylvania town was capable of putting in front of me. 80:08 I had moved into cold case work approximately two years earlier. That meant most of my working hours were spent downstairs in the evidence room, surrounded by cartons holding the remnants of crimes people had almost forgotten. 80:22 My wife Susan liked to tease me that I was slowly becoming another fixture in the basement. 80:27 Honestly, she had a point. 80:29 I had settled into the rhythm of it. 80:31 Take down a folder, go back through the witness accounts, telephone a few people, bring the computerized records up to date, and start again with the next case. 80:41 Most of the other detectives wanted as little to do with that room as possible. They found it discouraging, all those unanswered questions boxed up and left to gather dust. 80:51 For me, though, there was something calming about being there. 80:55 The fluorescent fixtures produced an uninterrupted hum. 80:58 Old paper and damp mildew scented the air. 81:01 Usually, the only other noise was the sound of my shoes carrying across the concrete walls. 81:07 That sense of quiet ended on a Monday morning in November 2017. 81:12 That was when I realized somebody had been interfering with the cases I was investigating. 81:17 I had gone downstairs to collect the files relating to the Garrett murder from 1989. 81:22 For the previous month, I had been taking another look at that investigation. 81:26 The carton should have been on shelf B14, exactly where I had returned it. 81:32 Third row up from the bottom. The case number was plainly written across its side in black marker. 81:38 Instead, it was on the floor next to the shelving. The lid sat at an angle, and it was obvious that the material inside had been handled. 81:46 Initially, I wondered whether Stan had shifted things around. He was our evidence clerk and had worked at the station since the 90s. But Stan recorded every change with almost obsessive care. If he had moved anything associated with a case I was actively reviewing, he would have sent me an email. 82:04 When I checked the security records, I found the part that really troubled me. 82:08 The access card history said no one had entered the room after I left on Friday afternoon. 82:13 Only six people were authorized to get in. There was me, the other two cold case detectives, Ford and Castellano, and Stan. The remaining two were Captain Rogers and Deputy Chief Hawthorne. Yet the carton in front of me made it impossible to deny that someone had come down there and searched those particular files. 82:33 And Garrett wasn't some arbitrary case. The victim had been a 19-year-old college student discovered behind a warehouse outside town after being beaten to death. 82:43 The original inquiry had run out of momentum after three months. 82:47 There had been no useful witnesses, no dependable leads, and too little physical evidence for the forensic methods available at the time to accomplish much. 82:57 What bothered me was the precision of the disturbance. The photographs from the scene were no longer in their proper sequence. 83:04 The witness accounts had been moved around. 83:07 Most importantly, the original detective's handwritten observations were gone. 83:12 Detective Roy had written those notes. He had retired eight years earlier. 83:17 His pages contained information that hadn't been included in the formal typed reports. 83:22 I knew because I had read them only two weeks before. 83:25 Among the details were several people of interest who had never been officially questioned. 83:30 One was the son of a well-known local businessman who had ties to several members of the city government back then. 83:37 I started examining the other investigations on my current workload. That was when uneasiness began turning into real fear, tightening across my chest. 83:47 Three additional cartons had been disturbed. 83:50 The disappearance of Melissa Howard in 1992, the unidentified man recovered from the river in 1987, and the 1995 double murder involving the Blackwood family. 84:03 Someone had searched each of them carefully. 84:05 Certain records had vanished. 84:08 Others had been shifted into different positions. 84:11 It didn't take long to recognize the common thread. 84:14 The person doing this was concentrating on unsolved killings and disappearances from the late 80s and early 90s. 84:21 The documents being removed or disrupted referred to particular investigating detectives or specific statements given by witnesses. 84:29 I stood in the cold basement, surrounded by years of loss and unanswered questions, trying to understand what I had stumbled into. 84:37 Whoever was responsible knew these investigations intimately. 84:41 They weren't searching at random. They knew precisely which pages mattered. 84:46 They also possessed some means of entering the room without appearing in our security records. That should not have been possible. 84:53 For the remainder of that Monday, I used my phone to photograph everything. Every carton that had been moved. 84:59 Every folder that was out of position. 85:02 Every sign that somebody had interfered with the files. 85:05 I didn't immediately file a report. Something told me I needed to slow down and learn more before announcing what I had discovered. 85:13 That feeling may have protected my career. It may also have kept me alive. 85:19 Rather than use the department's usual procedures, I visited an electronics shop during lunch and purchased three miniature wireless security cameras. 85:28 They were the sort people installed at home. 85:30 Each was about the size of a button, equipped with motion detection and the ability to record in darkness. 85:37 That evening, once most of the staff had gone, I returned downstairs. I said I needed extra time to work on an investigation. 85:45 It took me fewer than 20 minutes to position the cameras. One watched the main doorway. Another covered the shelving containing the cartons that had been searched. 85:54 The last faced the distant corner where we stored outdated surveillance gear and computers used for evidence work. 86:01 Any movement would trigger a notification on my personal phone. The recordings would go there as well. 86:07 Nothing would pass through the department's network. For three days there was no activity. 86:13 I kept checking the live views almost compulsively. Hour after hour the images showed only an empty room, unmoving shelves and patches of shadow. 86:23 Eventually I began questioning myself. Maybe I had made too much of it. 86:28 Maybe there was an ordinary explanation I simply hadn't considered. 86:32 Then, at 3.47 on Friday morning, a motion notification made my phone vibrate. 86:38 I reached for it on the bedside table, taking care not to disturb Susan. 86:43 My fingers shook as I opened the camera application. The infrared recording was rough and grainy, but I could clearly make out someone moving between the shelves. 86:52 They wore dark clothes. 86:55 Their face was concealed by what might have been a ski mask or a balaclava. 86:59 What made my mouth go dry was the certainty of their movements. They headed straight for particular sections without stopping to look around. 87:07 It was the behavior of someone who had followed the same route many times before. 87:12 The intruder removed the Blackwood homicide card and began examining its contents in an orderly fashion. 87:18 A small flashlight illuminated the papers. Every so often they used what looked like a phone to photograph a page. 87:26 I sat upright in bed, saving everything while I watched. They remained in the room for exactly 12 minutes. 87:33 During that visit, several documents came out of the Blackwood file and went into a black folder they had brought along. 87:39 Then they did something that almost caused me to lose my grip on the phone. 87:44 They approached the old evidence computer in the corner. 87:47 Without any hesitation, they signed in. 87:50 They knew the password. For roughly five minutes, they moved through the system. 87:55 Light from the monitor reflected against the fabric covering their face. There was no uncertainty in what they were doing. They had clearly used that computer before. 88:04 The speed and assurance of their hands on the keyboard suggested a knowledge of our internal systems that belonged to somebody within the department. 88:12 When they were done, they put the carton back. 88:15 They adjusted its position carefully, making sure it appeared untouched. Then they headed for the door. 88:21 Just before leaving, the person turned toward one of my cameras. They looked straight at it. For perhaps two seconds they held that stare. 88:30 Then they walked out as though nothing had caught their attention. 88:34 I felt cold all the way through. 88:36 The next morning I reached the station at around 6, earlier than I normally arrived. I wanted to inspect the evidence computer before anyone else showed up. 88:45 Its visible login history had been erased. But I understood enough about the system to know there were more detailed records beneath the ones most users could see. Those deeper logs were still available. 88:57 reading them made my stomach turn someone had been entering the database repeatedly for 18 months the visits always occurred between two and four in the morning during hours when the building was meant to be vacant dozens of old investigations had been opened and edited all dated from the same general period the worst part was how restrained those edits were a few words changed in a witness account A small shift in the sequence of events. 89:26 A name entered with a slightly different spelling. 89:29 Individually, none of it looked significant enough to set off an alert. 89:33 Taken together, the changes could make an investigation nearly impossible to resolve if another detective ever returned to it. 89:40 I compared the affected cases with the personnel records from their original inquiries. That comparison revealed the connection that changed everything. 89:49 Every altered investigation had originally involved the same four detectives. 89:54 Roy, who had since retired. 89:56 Paul Garrison, who had died following a heart attack in 2010. Hawthorne, now our deputy chief. Ann Rogers, now a captain. 90:05 During the late 80s and early 90s, the four had been colleagues and close friends. 90:10 They often handled investigations together or stepped in to cover one another. 90:15 The farther I looked, the uglier the history became. Witnesses in several of those cases had complained that they were being threatened. Others had reported evidence going missing or promising leads being ignored. 90:27 Those complaints had all ended up buried in administrative folders. 90:31 Internal reviews had labeled them unsubstantiated. And who had been responsible for those reviews? Hawthorne and Rogers themselves. 90:40 One report from 1993 was particularly damaging. 90:44 A witness named Jennifer Moss had alleged that Detective Garrison threatened her family if she testified about a person she had seen at the Blackwood crime scene. 90:53 The individual she identified was the nephew of a prominent construction company owner. 90:59 Around that time, the company had received several contracts from the city. 91:03 Two days after making her statement, Jennifer withdrew it. The investigation eventually stalled. 91:09 I knew I couldn't take what I had found to anyone without obtaining more, especially when two of the officers involved were directly above me in the chain of command. 91:19 I spent the weekend at home acting as though life was perfectly normal. 91:23 In secret, I copied the material I had collected onto several separate flash drives. 91:28 Susan could tell something was wrong. 91:30 She repeatedly asked whether everything at work was alright. For the first time in our marriage, I lied to her. That hurt nearly as much as realizing what had been happening inside my own department. 91:42 On Monday, I returned to the camera recordings from Friday night. This time, I concentrated on the smaller details, the things I might have overlooked while watching in shock. 91:52 That was when I spotted it. 91:54 The intruder favored their right side. There was a slight limp in the left leg, a particular unevenness in the way they walked. 92:02 I knew that movement. Hawthorne walked exactly the same way. He had injured himself during a pursuit in 2003. At department events, he liked telling the story of how it happened. The person's frame matched his too. 92:16 Tall, wide through the shoulders. 92:19 Even with the face hidden, there was something familiar in the way the intruder held their body. 92:24 I couldn't approach Captain Rogers. There was too much reason to believe he was part of it. Going to Hawthorne was obviously out of the question. 92:33 I would have to contact someone beyond the department. But before I did, I wanted proof that could withstand any attempt to challenge it. 92:42 I installed additional cameras. These were concealed throughout the room in places unlikely to draw anyone's attention. 92:49 I hid them inside old cartons that hadn't been opened in decades, behind ceiling panels that sat loose in their frames, even within a broken printer that had occupied the corner for years. 93:00 Then I took a further risk. I began setting small traps. 93:04 On selected boxes, I placed tiny strips of clear tape in arrangements that would be broken if anyone lifted the lids. 93:11 I photographed each placement so I could establish exactly how it had looked before being disturbed. 93:17 At the station, I also started talking openly about my progress on Garrett. I said I was close to solving it. 93:24 I said fresh information had turned up that could expose the whole story. 93:29 None of that was true. 93:31 I was trying to make whoever was responsible react. 93:34 I wanted them worried enough to make a mistake. 93:37 Hawthorne's response told me plenty. 93:40 All at once, he took an unusually close interest in my investigations. 93:44 Several times each day, he appeared beside my desk to ask how things were going. He always smiled. His eyes never did. 93:52 Two days later, the confrontation came, but it didn't happen in the way I had imagined. 93:58 I was staying late that evening for legitimate casework when Hawthorne entered my office around nine. 94:04 He shut the door. 94:06 Then he settled into the chair opposite me, looking entirely composed. 94:11 You've had a lot keeping you occupied, he said. 94:14 His tone was level, almost pleasant. 94:17 The cameras you put in are impressive. You've covered things very thoroughly. 94:22 My heart started pounding. I forced myself to keep my expression unchanged and asked what he was referring to. 94:29 He leaned back. Then he laughed. 94:32 He actually laughed before explaining that there were two ways this could go. 94:36 The first was early retirement. Full benefits. an excellent recommendation, and a generous bonus recognizing my years of service. 94:46 The second, he said, was that matters could become complicated. He didn't define the word. He didn't need to. He mentioned how unfortunate it would be if evidence surfaced suggesting I had mishandled investigations, how quickly a reputation could be ruined, how problems like that could extend to a person's family. 95:06 He allowed me 48 hours to make up my mind. 95:10 Then he left with the casual air of someone who had dropped in to discuss the forecast. 95:15 That night I duplicated everything again. Then I got in my car and drove three hours to the FBI field office in Philadelphia. 95:22 I delivered the records documenting 18 months of interference to agents who were already examining comparable activity in three other counties. 95:30 Six weeks later the arrests began. It was a Tuesday morning that at first felt no different from any other. 95:37 Then FBI agents entered our department and three more at the same time. 95:42 They arrested Hawthorne. They arrested Rogers. 95:45 Across the region, 14 additional serving and former officers were taken into custody. What emerged was a conspiracy that had lasted 30 years. 95:55 Local crime families had paid bribes. Evidence had been altered or concealed. At least 11 murders had been intentionally buried. 96:04 Some of the people killed had threatened to reveal the corruption. 96:07 Others had simply witnessed crimes committed by individuals whose connections made them untouchable. 96:13 Roy agreed to cooperate. 96:15 In return for reduced charges, the retired detective testified against the others. 96:20 He described how the payments had begun in 1987, how they selected which investigations would be allowed to disappear, how they frightened witnesses into silence or paid them to change their accounts. 96:33 And finally, we learned what had happened to the student in the Garrett case, the investigation that had set all of this in motion. 96:41 The businessman's son mentioned in Roy handwritten notes had killed him. $50,000 had bought the cover-up. 96:48 The four detectives divided the payment among themselves. I testified for three consecutive days. 96:55 I presented the recordings, the documents, and every piece of material I had gathered. 97:00 Hawthorne received a 35-year sentence. Rogers received 28. 97:05 The remaining defendants were given sentences ranging from 5 years to 20. 97:10 The FBI offered me a position. 97:13 I declined. 97:14 I remained in town and became the head of a newly established cold case unit operating with federal oversight. 97:21 Over the past three years, we have resolved 17 investigations using evidence that had been intentionally kept out of reach. 97:28 Susan tells me I sleep more soundly now. She's right. 97:32 Occasionally, I still walk down to the basement evidence room. It has been completely rearranged and different people are responsible for it now. 97:40 Standing among those shelves, I think about the families who finally learned what happened to the people they lost. 97:46 The room no longer feels haunted. It feels like somewhere the truth was finally allowed to win. 97:57 Story 7 My name is Sarah Bennett, and during that period of my career, I was spending more nights on late duty than I cared to acknowledge. 98:07 Usually, those shifts passed without much happening. There were reports to finish, forms to complete, and the occasional complaint about somebody making too much noise. 98:17 That night, however, a call on my phone broke through the familiar routine immediately. 98:21 A family said they had seen a man wearing a mask inside their hallway. 98:26 The father's voice held an odd combination of alarm and bewilderment. He sounded as though he was still struggling to decide whether the thing he had witnessed could actually have happened. 98:37 As I drove to their address, I expected to find frightened people who had mistaken a shadow for something more threatening. 98:43 What awaited me could not be dismissed as nerves or an exaggerated reaction. 98:48 Their home was a two-story colonial. Everything was clean and carefully maintained, giving me the impression that these weren't people inclined to create drama over nothing. 98:58 Inside, the atmosphere felt weighed down by a particular kind of quiet. It was the silence people impose on themselves when they are afraid that making a sound might draw someone's attention. 99:10 The mother, Claire, had her hand wrapped around her son's arm. She was gripping him hard enough to leave faint red impressions in his skin. 99:18 He couldn't have been more than 10 years old, but the fear in his wide-open eyes seemed far older than he was. 99:24 His father, Mark, walked repeatedly between the front entrance and the stairs. He kept saying the same thing. 99:31 I saw him. He was standing right there. 99:34 He remained certain of that, even after I personally checked the doors and windows and found them locked. 99:41 I accompanied the family through the house and asked them to show me the exact spot where they had seen the stranger. 99:46 The hallway lamp was still burning. Its pale yellow light reflected off the polished wood beneath our feet. 99:53 Mark indicated the far end of the passage, just outside the bedrooms. 99:57 According to him, the man had stood there wearing a black mask. 100:01 He hadn't said a word. He hadn't moved. 100:05 Mark shouted at him, and then somehow, he was no longer there. The account alone wasn't what bothered me most. It was the condition of the house. 100:14 Every lock appeared undamaged. There were no windows left open, no evidence that a door had been forced, and nothing broken anywhere. 100:22 I couldn't make those facts fit together. 100:25 And the fear shared by all three members of the family made it difficult to attribute the whole thing to imagination. 100:31 The moment that changed the direction of our walkthrough came when we reached the main bedroom. 100:36 There was something inside that none of them had told me about. A chair from the dining room had been placed beneath the doorknob on the bedroom's side. It was fitted into position with unmistakable care. There was only one reasonable explanation for that arrangement. 100:51 Somebody had attempted to block the door from within. 100:54 Claire drew in a sharp breath when she noticed it. She immediately insisted that neither of them had put it there. 101:01 Mark agreed at once. 101:03 His voice came close to breaking as he backed up what she said. Their boy began crying again. He said he didn't want to remain in the house. 101:11 I bent closer to look at the chair and almost immediately decided we needed someone to examine it for fingerprints. 101:18 That was when the call stopped feeling like an ordinary incident involving a frightened household. 101:23 It began to feel as though I had entered a situation somebody else had carefully arranged. 101:28 The crime scene team arrived promptly, while they worked on the chair dusting it for impressions. I stayed with the family in the living room. The house seemed to have contracted around us. 101:40 Every dark corner appeared to conceal something we didn't know. 101:43 Claire tried to occupy herself by putting the magazines on the coffee table into order. 101:49 Her hands shook too much to disguise how frightened she was. 101:53 Mark repeatedly drew the curtains aside to look out, although he knew we had found no damage to any of the locks. 101:59 Their son remained under a blanket. By then, he wouldn't speak at all. 102:04 I had dealt with panic on other calls. This felt different. They weren't simply frightened by the possibility of a stranger entering their home. They no longer understood whether the walls around them offered any protection at all. 102:17 When the fingerprint technician came over, he offered little by way of introduction. 102:22 He just lifted his eyebrows in a manner that told me the news wasn't good. 102:27 The impressions recovered from the chair did not belong to anyone in the family. They weren't incomplete. They weren't blurred or smeared. They were clear, distinct prints, almost deliberate in their quality, as though the person who left them had wanted their presence established. 102:44 The implications settled heavily on me. 102:47 If an intruder had genuinely been inside the bedroom, how had he left without disturbing a lock or producing any other obvious sign of his passage? 102:56 I chose not to tell the family about the fingerprints immediately. They were already struggling enough. Instead, I excused myself and went outside to examine the property again. 103:06 Perhaps there was something I had failed to notice the first time. The air was cool and sharp. Beyond the backyard, tall trees formed a line moving gently beneath the weak glow of the streetlights. 103:18 I inspected the earth, looking for footprints or any indication that someone had crossed it. 103:23 There were none, not even a scrape. 103:26 The grass appeared undisturbed. 103:29 Only one detail drew my attention. 103:32 Along the side of the porch railing there was a faint mark that suggested somebody might have rested their weight there for a moment. 103:38 It wasn't enough to establish how anyone had entered or departed, but considered alongside the chair blocking the bedroom door, it added to the impression that the whole incident was purposeful. 103:49 Almost staged. Whoever the man in the mask was, he seemed to want the family frightened and uncertain. 103:56 When I returned inside, I decided to speak with the boy once more. This time I did it gently and apart from his parents. 104:04 Children sometimes notice small things adults overlook, even when their recollection is tangled up with fear. 104:10 In a whisper, he told me the man had done more than stand motionless. He had tipped his head slightly to one side, as though he were listening. 104:19 That small addition disturbed me more than anything else I had heard that night. 104:23 I brought him back to Clarenmark, going over his words again and again in my mind. 104:28 A stranger listening without speaking inside their home. No forced entrance, no damaged locks. 104:35 Fingerprints on a chair that belonged to nobody who lived there. 104:38 The longer I examined it, the less it looked like a conventional burglary. We spent hours checking the house from one end to the other. Nothing further turned up. 104:48 Eventually exhaustion began affecting all of us. Claire asked me almost pleading not to leave just yet. 104:55 I stayed with my notebook open, returning to the same observations and marking them again, hoping that another look would reveal something I had missed. 105:03 Then the database results arrived, almost as though their timing had been arranged. 105:08 The fingerprints matched no one in any of the systems searched. Whoever had handled that chair wasn't an ordinary burglar whose prints were already sitting in a record we could retrieve. 105:18 That result made the incident feel like something beyond a straightforward breach of household security. 105:24 Someone careful and exact had passed through their hallway, and we had no way to identify them. 105:31 Before I left, I asked Mark to go over the encounter one final time, showing me where he had been and what he had seen. 105:38 We returned to the hallway. Above us the yellow light flickered. 105:43 He described the figure's complete stillness, the lack of any sound. 105:48 He told me that for an instant he had assumed someone was playing a joke on him. Then the man disappeared. 105:54 Nothing in Mark's telling faltered. 105:56 Listening to him, I could almost imagine the figure standing at the other end of the hall. 106:02 While he spoke, I noticed something else. The chair was no longer inside the bedroom. It had been returned to the dining area, set against the wall beside the table, precisely where it normally belonged. 106:15 None of us had moved it. 106:17 I kept that observation to myself. 106:19 Even so, the hair along my arms lifted. 106:22 Eventually, I persuaded the family to stay with a relative for the night while we secured the house. They gathered their things in a hurry. I waited near the entrance, looking over the surfaces and doorways one last time. 106:35 The house offered no explanation, but it didn't feel vacant either. 106:40 It felt as though something was watching. 106:43 When we were ready to leave, I locked the door personally. 106:46 I checked it twice. 106:48 Then I followed the family's vehicle until they reached the highway. 106:52 My headlights washed across their rear bumper as we drove. All the while I kept returning to what their son had said. The slight tilt of the head. 107:01 The appearance of listening. 107:03 What had the man been listening for? Who had he been listening to? 107:07 When I completed the report that morning I wrote it in the detached language the job required. 107:13 None of the unease I was still carrying appeared on the page. I recorded the facts. 107:18 Fingerprints from an unidentified person. 107:21 No indication of forced entry. 107:23 Items changing position without an explanation. But what I had taken away from that house was harder to reduce to a few lines. Someone had been able to occupy their home with an ease I couldn't account for. And whoever it was had left precisely enough behind to ensure that we knew they had been there. 107:41 Even now that family has never gone back to living in the house full time. 107:46 I don't blame them. 107:47 When the memory returns, the black mask isn't the detail that troubles me most. It's the quiet inside the bedroom where the chair had blocked the door. 107:56 A quiet that never felt as though it belonged to that home at all. 108:04 Story 8 Looking back on the years I spent wearing a badge, there is one night that has remained with me more clearly than any other call I ever answered. 108:14 My name is Dana Collins. 108:16 At the time I worked regular patrol along a quiet stretch of highway in an area that almost never appeared in the news. 108:23 My assignments didn't involve major investigations or the busy streets of a large city. 108:29 Most shifts consisted of responding to complaints about noise, dealing with an occasional drunk driver, or completing reports after arguments over property. 108:39 That was why the call concerning the abandoned roadside motel seemed so ordinary at first. 108:44 I assumed it would be another minor aggravation. 108:47 A few young people entering a building they had no business being inside. The motel had been shut for years. 108:54 Its sign was bleached by weather, with half the lettering damaged or missing. 108:58 Weeds had spread so thickly that they were almost swallowing the parking area. 109:03 The building sat low beside the highway, broad pieces of paint curled away from its exterior, reminding me of badly sunburned skin beginning to peel. 109:13 People around town sometimes said the property was cursed. 109:16 There had been a series of abrupt shutdowns, a fire, and several accidents nobody could properly account for. Whoever bought it never seemed to remain the owner for very long. 109:27 By the time I began taking calls there, the place was less a recognizable landmark than something everyone wished they didn't have to look at. People tended to stay away. 109:37 Most couldn't have explained exactly why. That night another report of trespassers sent me back to it. The person who called said lights had been moving behind the boarded up windows. There was no electrical service to the building. 109:51 It was after midnight when I entered the gravel lot. My headlights passed over the fractured asphalt and picked out broken beer bottles and abandoned spray paint cans scattered near the entrance steps. I expected to find teenagers challenging one another to remain inside the ruined building until the police arrived. 110:09 Even so, there was a peculiar wait to the air around the motel. 110:12 The quiet didn't feel like the ordinary silence of an empty property. It felt imposed. Getting through the front entrance took a hard push. Water had swollen the door in its frame, and it released with a long groan. 110:26 Inside, the lobby had been reduced to almost nothing. A desk remained along with a handful of overturned chairs. 110:34 As I swept my flashlight through the dust, graffiti emerged across nearly every wall. 110:39 I called out in the firm, carrying a voice we were trained to use, making it clear to anyone hiding inside that a police officer had entered. 110:47 Nobody answered. 110:49 I began checking the guest rooms. 110:51 Each seemed more damaged than the one before. 110:54 Mattresses had been cut apart. Doors hung crookedly from loose fittings. 110:59 Mold had spread across floorboards bent out of shape by damp. 111:03 Then, near the far end of the hallway, I noticed a detail that didn't fit. 111:08 One room's dimensions were wrong. The interior was too small for the space the building's arrangement should have given it. 111:15 I returned to the corridor and studied the walls. Along one side, the wallpaper was lifting beside a straight vertical join. 111:23 That seam didn't correspond with the positions of the wall studs. 111:27 I placed my palm against it and pushed. The surface shifted a little. It felt less like a solid wall than an empty panel. 111:35 My heartbeat accelerated. It wasn't quite fear yet. 111:39 It was the realization that I might have found something much more serious than a group of trespassing kids. 111:45 After several firm shoves, the concealed section opened with a creak. A narrow space appeared behind it. 111:52 The air coming through carried an entirely different smell, sour, stagnant, as though it had been shut away for far too long. 112:02 Beyond the opening was a concealed passage tighter than the motel's ordinary corridors. Plywood doors ran along it. 112:09 Each had a viewing hole cut from the inside rather than from the outer side. 112:14 I lowered myself and directed the flashlight through one of those openings. The beam revealed a room scarcely larger than a cupboard. Its only furnishing was a corroded cot. 112:24 Chains had been fixed to the wall with bolts. 112:27 High in one corner, a camera bracket remained screwed into place, aimed straight toward the bed. 112:33 The stillness of that room bore down on me with a force no loud sound could have matched. 112:38 This wasn't something someone had constructed as a joke. It wasn't extra storage. Every part of it had a purpose. Someone had designed it carefully. 112:48 I made myself continue to the other doors. Behind each was the same basic arrangement. 112:54 A space where a person could be held. 112:57 A way to record them. A way to keep their presence hidden. 113:01 In several rooms the cameras themselves were still attached. Their cables passed through holes toward the walls of the adjoining guest rooms. 113:10 Someone staying in those ordinary motel rooms could have watched what happened live, in comfort, while anyone outside remained completely unaware. 113:18 I had attended crime scenes before, but nothing I had been taught prepared me for the extent of what was hidden inside that building. 113:26 It wasn't only the existence of one concealed room. It was the entire system. 113:32 Every detail spoke of forethought, time, and cruelty. 113:36 At the end of the passage, I found an area that appeared to have served as an office. Plywood formed parts of it, and salvaged furniture had been assembled inside. 113:45 Ledgers were stacked across a desk. Water had damaged some of the books, but their contents could still be read. There were names, dates, descriptions. 113:55 Some lines had been marked with red Xs. Others included remarks whose meaning only began to emerge when I considered missing person investigations I had read about over the years. 114:05 It felt as though I were looking at a written inventory of people who had disappeared. 114:10 Suddenly, the repeated reports of trespassing took on another possible meaning. Perhaps someone had been coming back to collect whatever remained. Perhaps the things abandoned in that office were what they were looking for. 114:22 I called for additional units. My voice sounded more controlled than I expected it to. 114:28 Inside, I felt as though the ground beneath me had moved. 114:32 Dispatch confirmed officers were on their way, but we were on an isolated section of highway. 114:37 Reaching me would take time. 114:40 While I waited, I continued examining the office. Milk crates contained stacks of VHS cassettes. 114:47 The labels showed only numbers and dates. 114:49 Thinking about what those recordings might contain left my mouth dry. 114:54 I couldn't make myself play one. 114:56 The silence around me seemed to deepen. 114:59 It was almost as though the motel's walls were holding their breath alongside me. 115:04 When the other officers arrived, their reactions told me I wasn't the only person struggling to take it in. 115:10 Their faces held the same stunned expression I must have been wearing. 115:14 We looked like people who had entered a story that nobody would accept unless they could see the evidence for themselves. 115:20 Crime scene specialists spent weeks processing the property. They documented the hidden construction, collected the recording equipment, catalogued the ledgers and tapes. 115:32 and compared what they found with missing person reports from neighboring states. 115:36 Piece by piece, the evidence revealed something horrifying. 115:40 Dozens of names matched. Some belonged to people who had disappeared during road trips. 115:45 Others had been traveling for work. There were local residents too. People who had left home one day and simply never returned. 115:53 All of them had passed through that neglected motel beside the highway. State authorities and federal investigators became involved quickly. 116:02 Forensic teams recovered fingerprints, traces of DNA, and indications that the operation had continued much longer than anyone had initially believed. 116:12 But the people who had run it were gone. They had disappeared without leaving a trail. 116:17 What remained was the physical structure of everything they had done. I was questioned over and over. Investigators asked me to reconstruct my movements from the moment I entered the building to the discovery of the passage behind the wall. 116:31 The case settled on me in a way none of my other assignments had. It wasn't simply a collection of documents or items entered into an evidence record. It was the sensation of that first concealed door moving beneath my hand. The sight of a hidden world opening behind it. A world that should never have been possible to keep out of sight. 116:51 Eventually, the motel was condemned. The property was closed and secured. Some people wanted it demolished immediately. but orders preserving it as evidence and continuing investigations meant it had to remain standing. 117:05 Years have passed, and I still cannot travel along that section of highway without feeling something draw my attention toward it. 117:12 After the concealed rooms were discovered, the trespassing reports stopped, almost as though uncovering the place had quieted whatever had remained there. 117:21 I don't know whether the people responsible were ultimately arrested. 117:25 I don't know whether they escaped and established the same thing somewhere else. But there is one thing I do know. 117:32 Concealed behind those walls were the lives of countless people who had gone missing. 117:37 And I will always remember the instant I understood that I was standing in the center of their graveyard.
