Five of them had been crushed into the snow near the place where the truck had stopped above. 07:27 They were Marlboro Reds with the gold band still visible around one of them. 07:32 What caused my chest to tighten was not merely the fact that I had never smoked. They were playing with me. 12:16 I switched off the flashlight to conserve the batteries and denied them the pleasure of observing my fear. 12:22 I remained inside the dark cab, listening as they moved around above me as though they possessed unlimited time. 12:28 The worst moments came whenever they became silent for 10 or 15 minutes, just long enough for me to believe they had finally gone. 12:36 Then another object would strike the truck. 12:39 My phone had no reception. 12:42 I had been without service since passing the final cellular tower approximately 40 miles earlier. 12:47 Even so, I recorded a voice memo describing everything that had occurred. I had never been happier to see orange jackets in my life. 17:45 They transported me by helicopter and I spent three days in a hospital in Kalispell while surgeons repaired my ankle with metal pins. 17:54 Afterward, the power company placed me on permanent disability. They said nerve damage in my ankle made it too dangerous for me to continue working along mountain roads. They did not have to persuade me. 18:06 I relocated to Billings, accepted a desk position coordinating logistics for a shipping company, and have not returned to Glacier County since. 18:15 However, one aspect continues to haunt me. 18:18 When state police investigated, they located my truck precisely where I had described it. The watchers are still out there and they are extremely, extremely patient. 21:12 Story 2. 21:14 People are always warning travelers not to drive through Appalachia after nightfall. 21:19 However, once you have completed the journey a dozen times without experiencing any trouble, you begin to assume they are exaggerating. 21:27 I had been making quarterly trips between Charlotte and Cincinnati for my medical equipment sales territory since graduating from college in 2012. 21:36 And the worst thing that had ever happened to me was receiving a speeding ticket. 21:40 On that particular October evening, I was traveling south after a successful week of product demonstrations. 21:46 Instead of stopping at a motel, I decided to continue through the night. 21:51 My daughter's third birthday celebration was scheduled for the following morning. and I had promised that I would be there when she woke up. 21:59 At approximately 11.30, shortly after crossing the Virginia state line, the mountains became especially dark, and cellular towers seemed more like possibilities than guarantees. 22:10 Without warning, my front right tire exploded with the force of a shotgun blast. Instead, it halted approximately 30 feet behind me. Then its headlights switched off completely. 24:13 The surrounding darkness returned, leaving only the weak illumination from my telephone on the ground and the repeated orange pulses of the explorer's hazard lights. 24:22 Two doors opened and then closed with calculated care. They were not slammed. Each one was shut firmly and quietly, almost as though the occupants were attempting not to disturb someone. 24:34 As my eyes adjusted, I saw two silhouettes advancing through the intermittent orange glow. 24:39 One was tall and narrow, apparently wearing a baseball cap. The second man was shorter but much broader, with a heavy build of someone accustomed to carrying feed sacks or performing construction work. 24:51 Neither of them offered a greeting. They did not ask whether I required assistance. They said nothing at all. 24:58 They simply continued approaching at a controlled pace, as though they had performed this exact routine many times and already understood how the situation would end. 25:08 The taller man carried something in his right hand, holding it low beside his leg. In the limited light I could not determine whether it was a tool or something more dangerous. 25:18 Evening, I said. 25:20 My voice sounded more controlled than I felt. 25:23 Thank you for stopping, but I already have the spare out. I should be finished in a few minutes. 25:29 The shorter man released a quiet laugh. It was not a warm or friendly sound. 25:34 It immediately dried my mouth. 25:37 They continued forward while separating from one another. 25:40 One began moving toward the front of the explorer, while the other circled behind it. The tire iron remained in my hand from loosening the lug nuts. I tightened my grip around the cold metal, which suddenly seemed both comforting and completely insufficient. 25:55 The taller man finally spoke. His accent was local and thick. 26:00 That's a nice watch you have there. Rolex. 26:03 It was not a Rolex, it was merely a Seiko that my wife had given me for our anniversary. Yet the manner in which he said it, followed by the way his eyes moved from my wrist to the Explorer and then to the laptop bag visible through the rear window, made his intentions clear. 26:19 The shorter man had already positioned himself between me and the driver's door, while his companion blocked the route around the front of the vehicle. They had done this before. They had probably done it dozens of times selecting travelers on an isolated mountain highway where shouting would accomplish nothing and assistance would never arrive in time. 26:39 Wallet, phone watch, and everything inside the vehicle, the tall man said. 26:44 He raised the object in his hand, allowing me to identify it as a crowbar, and tapped it slowly against his palm in time with the blinking hazard lights, Make this easy for yourself. 26:56 However, something in their expressions, particularly the subtle glances and signals they exchanged, convinced me that an easy outcome was never actually available. 27:05 They were not present merely to commit a robbery. They intended something more. 27:11 The shorter man looked toward the explorer's interior, noticing the child's safety seat in the rear and the stick figure family sticker attached to the back window. 27:20 He appeared to be calculating distances and deciding how long it would take to relocate my vehicle somewhere it could be abandoned. 27:28 Here's the problem, the shorter man said. 27:30 He removed what appeared to be a folding knife and opened it smoothly, allowing the orange light to reflect from the blade. 27:37 Sometimes people report their vehicles stolen. They say somebody robbed them and cause all kinds of trouble for honest people who are only trying to earn a living. We can't allow that. 27:49 He stepped closer. 27:50 I could smell cigarettes on him, along with a chemical odor that might have been methamphetamine, or perhaps merely some type of industrial cleaning product. 28:00 So you're going to come for a little ride with us. We'll make certain you understand why staying quiet is important. 28:06 At that moment, I knew with complete certainty that entering their truck would mean never seeing my daughter blow out her birthday candles. 28:13 The tire iron suddenly seemed like my only possibility of survival. 28:18 Both men had begun tightening their bodies, reading my movements as clearly as I was interpreting theirs. 28:24 The taller man attacked first. He swung the crowbar in a broad arc intended to strike my ribs, but adrenaline had already seized control of me. 28:34 I moved inside the reach of his weapon and drove the tire iron upward with all my strength. 28:39 It struck him beneath the chin with a hard crack, sending him staggering backward into the guardrail. 28:45 The shorter man lunged with the knife. I felt the blade cut through my jacket and burn across my left arm. His momentum carried me forward and I slammed my shoulder into his chest, causing both of us to fall onto the gravel. 28:59 We rolled across the roadside, struggling for control of the knife. Stones dug into my back while his breath, sour and hot, struck my face. 29:07 I forced my knee between our bodies and shoved hard enough to create a small gap. 29:12 Then I swung the tire iron again. It struck his wrist. 29:17 The knife flew from his hand and slid across the pavement. 29:20 Behind me, the taller man groaned as he attempted to stand. He was spitting something that sounded like blood and fragments of broken teeth. 29:29 The shorter man scrambled toward his knife. 29:31 I was already moving. 29:33 Driven entirely by survival instinct, I ran toward the explorer, tore open the driver's door, threw myself inside, and activated the locks just as the tall man crashed against the passenger side window. 29:46 A bloody smear remained across the glass. The engine started immediately. 29:52 I shifted into drive even though the ruined tire continued striking the wheel well. Their pickup remained behind me, preventing a direct retreat. 30:00 Therefore, I did the only thing that came to mind. 30:03 I shifted into reverse and pressed the accelerator to the floor.
